Liverpool's Steven Gerrard Turned Down Move and Wants Luis Suarez to Do the Same
Steven Gerrard has revealed, in a report published on sportinglife.com, that he turned down a move away from Liverpool last season and wants Luis Suarez to follow his lead and commit to staying at Anfield.
Suarez is a target for both Arsenal and Real Madrid, with Liverpool having rejected two offers from the Gunners for their Uruguayan star.
Arsenal can offer the lure of Champions League football, but Gerrard had that carrot dangled in front of him last season and he elected to remain loyal to the only club he has played for.
"I had a chance to leave last year," Gerrard is quoted as saying on sportlinglife.com. "It was for a club in the Champions League, not a Premier League club, but I wasn't tempted. I've been through that before."
A report in the Daily Telegraph by Chris Bascombe claims it was European champions Bayern Munich who made the bid for Gerrard.
Gerrard revealed recently that he has made repeated pleas for Suarez to stay, but he concedes that the forward will make his own mind up in time.
"I think the only person who knows what's happening is Luis himself. He has a huge decision to make and, as his teammate, I have to show him respect and give him space to make whatever decision he wants to make.
"
Gerrard holds Suarez in the highest regard and he feels the club’s season hinges on whether Liverpool can keep hold of the striker.
"I think everyone knows how highly I rate him and how much I want him to stay, and what we can achieve this season basically depends on whether he stays or goes, I believe.
"
Gerrard will be in action later on Saturday as the Reds host Olympiacos in his testimonial.
It was against the Greek side that Gerrard scored one of his finest goals to fire the club towards Champions League glory in 2005.
