Tottenham 2013-14: Picking a Spurs Starting XI to Include Their Summer Signings

Frank WagnerJun 8, 2018

It's been quite an eventful few days at Tottenham.

The club completed two transfers, bringing in a much-needed striker in Valencia's Roberto Soldado on Thursday, according to BBC Sport, having curiously shipping off Steven Caulker to Cardiff City on Wednesday.

And yet, despite those transactions actually coming to fruition, the biggest story surrounding Spurs remains the status of Gareth Bale amid his ongoing transfer saga, as per Darren Lewis of the Mirror.

With so many shakeups taking place in such a short period of time, how is Tottenham's squad shaping up for the rapidly approaching season?

Here is a Spurs starting XI given the current roster at White Hart Lane.

GK: Hugo Lloris

1 of 11

Hugo Lloris has become the biggest shoo-in for Tottenham's starting lineup heading into the new season.

The goalkeeper is certain to stay at White Hart Lane through the summer, has no injury problems and has little competition for his spot.

At the age of 26, Lloris should be a fixture in Spurs' starting lineup for years to come.

Other option: Brad Friedel

LB: Danny Rose

2 of 11

After impressing on loan with Sunderland last season, Danny Rose could be returning to a starting place in Tottenham's lineup.

Benoit Assou-Ekotto's claim on the role has become slightly more tenuous than in years past, with his inconsistent play last season making his stock take a hit.

However, it wouldn't be surprising to see Rose and Assou-Ekotto split time this season.

After all, one must see how Rose fits back into the squad after a year-long absence.

Other option: Benoit Assou-Ekotto

CB: Younes Kaboul

3 of 11

After a nasty injury kept him away from the squad for 12 months, Younes Kaboul returns to Tottenham like a new signing.

The centre-back is a clear starter at this point, what with the club's sale of Steven Caulker and the injury to Jan Vertonghen.

However, it is unclear just how well the Frenchman will return from his terrible injury.

Other option: New transfer

CB: Michael Dawson

4 of 11

Despite being the captain of Tottenham, Michael Dawson's place in the starting lineup is not so solid.

The Englishman formed a solid partnership with Jan Vertonghen last season, but the Belgian's injury means that that link is severed to start the season.

Further, Younes Kaboul is returning from a season-long injury with hopes of reestablishing his starting role at White Hart Lane.

If Kaboul can return with the same form with which he left, and either Vertonghen quickly returns from injury or Spurs sign a new option, Dawson could find himself riding the bench.

As it stands now, though, Dawson should be captaining the side from the field to start the season.

Other options: Jan Vertonghen, new transfer

RB: Kyle Walker

5 of 11

Kyle Walker enters the season as the clear choice at right-back.

Walker established himself as the first choice in 2011-12, putting together a fine season and placing himself on the map for potential England call-ups.

However, this past season was a relative disappointment, with inconsistent play littering portions of his season.

Still, Walker is the best option at right-back and should get another chance to prove himself this season.

Other option: Kyle Naughton

DM: Sandro

6 of 11

Sandro returns from injury this season and immediately assumes the starting position he left.

In January, the Brazilian suffered knee damage that required surgery, ruling him out for the rest of the season.

The injury did not get the credit it deserved for deciding the race for fourth. After all, Sandro had put together a fine run of form before the incident, and Tottenham had a tough time replacing him.

With manager Andre Villas-Boas likely shifting the tactics to a holding 4-3-3, Sandro should fit right in for the holding role.

Other option: Lewis Holtby

CM: Mousa Dembele

7 of 11

Despite missing time on and off throughout this past season, Mousa Dembele established himself as a fan favorite at White Hart Lane.

The Belgian has an incredible knack for holding the ball up and keeping possession, providing a bridge between the back and the front.

With more attacking options for Spurs this upcoming season, Dembele has become even more useful to Spurs.

Let's just hope he can stay healthy for a full season.

Other option: Clint Dempsey

CM: Paulinho

8 of 11

Paulinho enters Tottenham as the newest creative attacking-midfield force in a side that needed it.

The Brazilian came to White Hart Lane as a record signing (at the time, at least), thanks mostly to his fine performances at the Confederations Cup, where he helped Brazil to the title.

It's unclear how Paulinho will fit in with his new club or in his new league, but Spurs supporters are rightly excited to see how it pans out.

Other option: Gylfi Sigurdsson

LF: Nacer Chadli

9 of 11

Nacer Chadli is Tottenham's newest young and skilled winger.

The Belgian thrived in the Dutch Eredivisie's FC Twente, where he put together a fine goalscoring tally in his three seasons.

At just 23 years old, Chadli could mature into Spurs' biggest threat if a certain Welshman leaves.

Other option: Aaron Lennon

RF: Gareth Bale

10 of 11

While he is still under contract at Tottenham, Gareth Bale is an obvious choice for the starting lineup at White Hart Lane.

The reigning PFA Player of the Year is rapidly coming of age and establishing himself as one of the world's top players.

Last season, he almost single-handedly carried the club through a rough middle of the season, showing a level of goalscoring abilities not yet seen.

With the new tactics and attacking options at Spurs this season, Bale's prowess could just grow.

However, that is only if the Welshman stays at the Lane.

Other option: Aaron Lennon

CF: Roberto Soldado

11 of 11

After a season in which Tottenham was left in desperate need of a competent striker, Spurs supporters should be thrilled to see Roberto Soldado entering White Hart Lane.

According to Sports Illustrated, the North London club signed the Spaniard for a record transfer fee Thursday, ending a year-and-a-half long search for the perfect man to play up front.

What Soldado lacks in aerial battles he more than makes up for with the ability to hold the ball up and put it in the back of the net.

Given the woeful performances put in by Spurs strikers last season, Roberto Soldado could easily become the signing of the summer.

Other options: Jermain Defoe, Emmanuel Adebayor
