Ranking Manny Pacquiao's Most Memorable Fights
Manny Pacquiao is getting back in the ring in November against highly-ranked Brandon "Bam Bam" Rios.
Pacquiao has been one of the most dynamic and explosive fighters of the last decade, but his last two fights were both losses.
Pacquiao, 34, could have decided to retire after getting knocked out by Juan Manuel Marquez last December. Instead, Pacquiao made the decision to continue boxing. Pacquiao's fans are expecting a big showing in his return.
That would not be a shock. Pacquiao has had a litany of exciting fights throughout his career.
Here's a look at the eight most memorable fights.
7. Pacquiao vs. Marco Antonio Barrera (2003)
1 of 7This fight was utter domination by Pacquiao, and he handed out a fearsome beating to Marco Antonio Barrera until Barrera's corner decided to throw in the towel in the 11th round.
Pacquiao and Barrera got their feet tangled in the first round, and Pacquiao appeared to slip to the canvas. However, the slip was ruled a knockdown, and that angered Pacquiao and raised his game. He started connecting with stiff rights and powerful lefts and took over the fight. He knocked down Barrera in the third round, and his attack never relented.
Barrera fought on gamely, but Pacquiao did not give him any opportunity to get back in the fight.
6. Pacquiao vs. Lehlo Ledwaba (2001)
2 of 7This was the fight that Pacquiao announced his presence to the American boxing audience. Pacquiao fought Lehlo Ledwaba on short notice in Las Vegas, and this was his first fight on American soil.
Pacquiao looked a bit tentative in the first round, but he soon got into gear and took the fight to Ledwaba. Pacquiao punished Ledwaba with hard punches and knocked him down three times before the fight was stopped in the sixth round.
Boxing fans knew Pacquiao was a force to be reckoned with after this explosive performance.
5. Pacquiao vs. Erik Morales II (2006)
3 of 7This was an important fight for Pacquiao since he had lost a unanimous decision to Erik Morales in their first battle a year earlier.
Pacquiao came into the ring in Las Vegas in excellent condition and fully motivated. He made sure there was going to be no chance that Morales could come up with the victory in this meeting as he made a statement with his power punching and earned a 10th round TKO.
Morales fought hard throughout the fight and got in his share of punches, and that allowed him to keep the fight relatively close on the scorecards, but it was Pacquiao who got in the telling blows and he clearly won the fight in impressive fashion.
4. Pacquiao vs. Miguel Cotto (2009)
4 of 7This was one of the most anticipated fights of Pacquiao's career. Miguel Cotto was a hard puncher,ย and this fight was expected to be a battle of attrition since both men seemingly had the power to knock out the other.
However, Pacquiao proved to be the sharper fighter. Cotto won the first round, but Pacquiao took it to him from that point forward. The Filipino Flash registered knockdowns in the third and fourth rounds, and whenever Cotto tried to mount an assault of his own, Pacquiao came back with his own power shots.
Pacquiao put the fight away with a one-sided showing in the ninth round, but Cotto would not quit. He continued to take heavy punishment until the fight was stopped in the 12th round.
3. Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez I (2004)
5 of 7One of the greatest fights of the last decade, Pacquiao overcame his tendencies as a slow starter by knocking Marquez down three times in the first round.
However, the brilliant Marquez bounced back beautifully after that, using his hard left jabs and crisp straightย rights to get back into the fight and climb into contention with each succeeding round. The two men put on a brilliant exhibition of boxing, and the result was a 12-round draw.
It was the first in a series of exciting bouts with Marquez that became one of the best boxing rivalries of the last 40 years.
2. Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez IV (2012)
6 of 7Pacquiao had a 2-0-1 advantage over Juan Manuel Marquez when they met for the fourth time in December 2012.
Marquez looked stronger and more powerful in this fight than he had in any of the previous three. He proved that when he knocked Pacquiao down with a big overhand right in the third round. Pacquiao recovered nicely from that punch and gave a strong account of himself the rest of the round.
Pacquiao took over the fight and scored his own knockdown in the fifth round. The sixth round was more of the same as Pacquiao appeared to be looking for a chance to register a knockout. However, seconds before the end of the round, Pacquiao left himself open, and Marquez delivered the most powerful punch of his career right on the point of Pacquiao's chin.
The result was a stunning knockout and one of the sport's most shocking finishes in memory.
1. Pacquiao vs. Oscar De La Hoya (2008)
7 of 7Even though Oscar De La Hoya was close to retirement when these two got together in the ring, few expected Pac-Man to have a legitimate chance of pulling the upset. De La Hoya had simply been through too much in his career, and few thought Pacquiao could get the best of him.
However, when the fight started, Pacquiao was the more efficient and aggressive fighter, and he took it to De La Hoya for 12 rounds. It was a substantial performance, and the Golden Boy had no answers. De La Hoya stayed on his stool at the start of the ninth round.
Pacquiao's stunning victory shocked the boxing world.
