Chelsea Transfer News: Recapping Blues' Biggest Summer Moves
Although Chelsea has already landed several talented players during this summer's transfer window, Jose Mourinho and the Blues are still waiting to reel in a game changer.
The Stamford Bridge club has been linked to Manchester United star Wayne Rooney for the better part of the summer, and Chelsea appear confident that it can land the English striker before the window closes, according to The Mirror's Martin Lipton.
But there's obviously still a lot that must happen before that potential move would become reality.
So, with only a month left before the transfer window closes, let's take a look at Chelsea's biggest additions thus far.
Chelsea Adds Quality, Potential with Andre Schurrle
Hoping to strike more fear into the opposition next season, Chelsea went out and acquired German forward Andre Schurrle this summer.
The 22-year-old has looked superb in recent appearances for the German national team as well as former club team Bayer Leverkusen. Schurrle scored 18 goals in 65 league appearances for the Bundesliga squad from 2011 to 2013.
He has seven goals in 24 appearances for Germany's national team.
One of the club's best moves thus far, adding Schurrle means that Fernando Torres could see some competition at the top of the lineup in 2013-14—if he's still with the club come the start of the season.
Marco van Ginkel Offers Midfield Boost
Another sensational signing this summer, Marco van Ginkel shows tremendous promise as an attacking midfielder at Stamford Bridge.
Signed at the start of July, the reigning Dutch Football Talent of the Year has already shown flashes of brilliance for the Blues during their preseason tour of Asia.
Van Ginkel is much more than a creator, though; the 20-year-old possesses exceptional finishing ability and is a threat around the box, evidenced by his 23 goals for Vitesse Arnhem since 2010.
There's definitely a lot to love about van Ginkel's game and what he brings to the table for Chelsea next season and down the road. Many consider him to be Frank Lampard's eventual replacement in midfield. Based on what the Dutch youngster has shown us to this point, there's no reason to believe he can't match the veteran's production at Stamford Bridge.
Mark Schwarzer Provides Goalkeeping Depth
Petr Cech has been a stellar goalkeeper for Chelsea over the years, but the club made a smart move to add an experienced pair of hands behind him in Australia's Mark Schwarzer.
The 40-year-old played the past five seasons with Fulham in the Premier League, appearing in over 170 league matches for the Cottagers. On top of having appeared in over 740 club matches over the course of his career, Schwarzer has made over 100 appearances with the Australian national team dating back to 1993.
Schwarzer may not see a ton of action this coming season, but his presence will bring the best out of Cech and give Mourinho and his squad confidence if their No. 1 keeper goes down for any stretch of time.
