Ring Rap With Matt: Should Jobbers Be In The Hall Of Fame?

Matthew HesterMay 9, 2009

Hello everyone. I, as always, want to thank you all for taking the time to check out my latest read.

When we think of all time greats in the ring, Many times the same names come up .You will always hear people mention Flair, Hogan, Stone Cold, the list goes on and on.

What if I were to throw out a few names myself ?

Who can ever forget the living legend Brady Boone.

Does he ring a bell in your head?

If he doesn't, well how about one of the all time great Reno Riggins?

Still nothing huh, oh I know, who can ever forget the one and only Duane Gill. Okay  kiddies one last try how about Steve Lombardi(ding ding ding).

I remember him, wasn't he that guy that always lost?

Folks in case you haven't figured it out by now I'm talking about jobbers. Here is the million dollar question though, do they belong in the HOF?

Since pro wrestling stopped shooting in the 1920's, their have always been jobbers. It was a dirty deed that had to be done by someone, yet it is a vital roll that helped make what we consider the ring greats of our time.

Using the old noodle I can remember watching shows like Saturday nights main event, and Wrestling challenge.

The ring announcer would say a little something like this .

On his way to the ring from Minnesota Mr perfect. His opponent, insert state, Scott Casey. Not knowing now their roles back then, I would say to myself who is Scott Casey?

I'm sure I'm not alone on this one, but over time we grew to love these poor lugs.I can recall many times where I would be pulling for the jobber just to see him finally win. Heck my favorite was Barry Horowitz.

The funny thing was they weren't bad wrestlers.

We had guys like Canada's greatest athlete Iron Mike Sharpe, Who always had a cast on his arm, and god bless him because who can forget the Los Conquistadors with their shiny gold outfits.

Bobby Heenan often referred these lovable losers as "Ham and Eggers." Once in awhile though, we would see are, often fallen, heroes pull off the occasional win.

It was most of the times against a lower classed jobber, but a win was a win. On a rare occasion we would even see them pull off a major upset.

I can remember when the Brooklyn Brawler got a win on HHH. Let me tell you folks for those that did not see it, the crowd went crazy. That is one I would YouTube, it was a trip to see.

The one important thing to remember about these guys was, they were paid to loose and wrestling is fake.

So how does it make them any less important then the stars they put over?

In my opinion it doesn't. They did their job and they did it well and for me or anyone else to call them as bums would be wrong.

If Vince can put in ring announcers, commentators, and promoters, then why not make a little room for the small guys.

Didn't they have a say in how the matches turned out?

Would we see the likes of Bret Hart, Hulk Hogan, and Ted DiBiase if their wasn't someone to put them over?

We all know the answer to that one folks.

So I say to Vince, have a heart and give the losers like, Brooklyn Brawler and Horowitz, their dues. They have earned the respect of their peers, the fans, and promoters all over.

Well folks that's my two cents on the issue. Take it for what its worth.

As always good night and god bless.
