Gold Cup 2013 Schedule: How and When to Watch Tournament Semifinals

Rob GoldbergJun 8, 2018

The Gold Cup only has three matches remaining, but the action is just picking up.

After a few weeks of uneven play from various teams representing CONCACAF, the remaining four nations are the best the region has to offer. Mexico, Panama, United States and Honduras are all still alive in World Cup qualifying, and any of them can win this prestigious tournament.

However, they first need to defeat each other in the semifinals. Here is a look at each matchup with players to watch in both games.

Honduras Player to Watch: Donis Escober

Although it is not all that exciting to call a goalkeeper the player to watch, the truth is that Donis Escober is the reason that Honduras is playing in the semifinals.

In the quarterfinal against Costa Rica, Honduras struggled to maintain possession and were lucky to get one goal across. Meanwhile, the opposing squad had 13 shots and more scoring chances near the net.

However, Escober made sure the match stayed a shutout, especially thanks to a few impressive saves late in the match.

The keeper has made three starts in this tournament and has three clean sheets to show for it. When the squad decided to rest him against Trinidad and Tobago, backup Kevin Hernandez allowed two goals.

Escober is obviously important to the Honduras defense, which has been excellent so far at the Gold Cup. The United States will have a tough time getting goals in this match.

United States Player to Watch: Joe Corona

There is no question as to who is the best player on the United States roster. Landon Donovan has been dominant throughout the four matches, accounting for nine goals. Only Panama has that many goals as a team.

You can expect the midfielder to continue his strong play with great passing and vision in this one.

However, it will also be interesting to watch the continued improvement of Joe Corona. The 23-year-old midfielder has displayed his creativity in the past few matches, as well as a great finishing ability near the net.

He has been a big part of the American attack in this tournament, and he is proving his ability as he attempts to earn a spot on the World Cup roster.

If he keeps playing like he has lately, that will not be a question.

Mexico Player to Watch: Marco Fabian

Fans of El Tri have been waiting for Marco Fabian to make this kind of an impact for years. However, the 24-year-old midfielder is finally proving that he can help out the senior squad.

Fabian has three goals in the tournament, one in each of the matches during the group stage. When he is not scoring, he is incredibly active with the ball and consistently puts pressure on the defense and goalkeepers.

Although he still needs to improve a bit as a passer, he is already able to create his own opportunities either in front of the net or from further out.

Mexico has had trouble getting goals in all competitions, but Fabian shows that help is on the way. Of course, he will need to come through once again to help his side advance beyond the semifinals.

Panama Player to Watch: Gabriel Torres

Thanks to some poor mistakes by opposing defenses, Gabriel Torres is tied for the most goals in the Gold Cup.

Torres has five goals in four matches, although three of them came from penalty shots. Still, he proved his ability to stay composed in big moments to score from the spot each time.

In the other goals, he showed a knack for being in the right place at the right time and had strong finishes each time.

Panama is not usually an offensive juggernaut and have even been inconsistent in this tournament. However, the recent 6-1 victory over Cuba proved that it can be a strong attacking squad when things go right.

Torres is a big part of that success, and he will look to replicate the two-goal performance he had against Mexico to start the tournament.
