Punishing Paul Williams: Road Gets Thinner and Thinner
One man beat the main man but the main man beat the other man yet the other man and the so called main man still get more recognition then the one man, confused? Thought so...
The so called main man were talking about is Antonio Margarito (aka Marga-cheto) who beat Miguel Cotto (the other man) but prior to this Margarito lost to Paul Williams yet Cotto and Margarito are still seen in higher regard compared to Paul Williams.
It can be said that Margarito's reputation is now tarnished and he is now out of the equation and he deserves to be banned from the ring for good and that Cotto's defeat to him was not legit and without the hand wraps Cotto may have won (assuming he used hand wraps) but the same question arises, why is Paul Williams not rated as highly as Cotto?
One of the reasons which have been brought up quite regularly by boxing experts and analysts is the fact that Paul Williams is a freak of nature, standing at 6'1" with an arm span like no other boxer.
He can move up and down weight divisions between the welterweight up to super middleweight (in my opinion) with ease and still carry his power and skill set which makes it hard for him to get an opponent as he is continually avoided and the last opponent he faced?
Shane Mosley conqueror Ronald Winky Wright, another avoided fighter. I can see why Winky is avoided in terms of box office and marketability, his fighting style is turtle like but effective, yet not pleasing on the eye to a general sports fan who wants to see some flash combos followed by an uppercut.
Where Winky has that problem Williams hasn't, in fact Williams is a work horse and is the only fighter out there that can riddle as many punches per round as the now retired Calzaghe.
Williams could win most fights against smaller guys with his jab alone but chooses not to so what’s the problem.
Granted his one points loss to Carlos Quintana, whom he knocked out in the rematch, could have been avoided but it barely raised an eyelid when it happened so it seems that Williams was always destined to be recognised by boxing fans only and cannot get onto the mainstream level where Floyd, Manny and even Calzaghe sit today.
Boxing today states that politics run the rule and if your not established and you cant bring a fan base then your not worthy, Williams could of increased that fan base.
One matchup which slipped his grasp was the potential dust up between himself and Kelly Pavlik but for some reason the match didn't happen and again there was no hype or media talk to make this fight happen, soon after Pavlik got beat by some old guy, does Williams lack charisma, is he not punishing his opponents enough or does he need to broaden his appeal internationally.
However after beating Wright who will come to face him, who is a Paul Williams fan, would you pay to watch him fight Floyd Mayweather at welter or is that a mismatch, would you pay to watch him fight Bernard Hopkins at middleweight or is that a mismatch, question is who would you pay to watch him fight?
Answer: Arthur Abraham, if he can put up enough interest for this fight and win then he can rule and bring interest to a very weak division and at the very least have Europe talking about him.
