John Cena: 5 Respectable Reasons Why People Hate the WWE Champion
Despite being the face of the WWE, John Cena is one of the most hated professional wrestlers in history. No matter who you talk to, every single member of the WWE Universe has something they want to say about the WWE champion.
It’s pretty clear-cut when you’re talking about Cena: You either enjoy watching him do his thing on WWE TV, or you hate the guy with a passion. It’s difficult to find fans who will respect and listen to both sides of the Cena argument without yelling out profanities.
As the title suggests, this slideshow will present five respectable reasons as to why WWE fans hate Cena. Of course, Cena isn’t perfect and should be criticized appropriately for a number of unpopular characteristics, and the reasons listed in this piece support that claim.
Here at five respectable (or passable) reasons why wrestling fans hate Cena.
1. "I Hate John Cena Because He Doesn't Put over WWE Superstars"
1 of 5Chris Jericho, Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker are three WWE legends who have no problem putting over younger Superstars. No doubt, Cena is the face of the company and shouldn't be losing on a regular basis, but, my word, he's had so many chances to put over other talent.
A lot of people hate Cena for burying Nexus, a heel faction of WWE rookies who took the company by storm in 2010. Nexus was unpredictable and even defeated Cena in a couple of high-profile matches, but in the end, Cena demolished one of the most promising groups in WWE history.
The most recent example of Cena not putting over other Superstars came at the 2013 Royal Rumble. Ryback was at an all-time high, and toward the end of the Rumble, he and Cena were the only other two Superstars left in the ring.
If Ryback were to eliminate Cena and win the Royal Rumble, he could have gone to WrestleMania and competed for the World Heavyweight Championship. However, Ryback's momentum quickly stalled, and now he has a "Cryback" gimmick, where he whines and complains about being injured. That's no way to book a monster like Ryback.
Even if Cena lost the Royal Rumble, he could have still gone on to defeat The Rock at WrestleMania 29. He could have just won a number one contenders match or something along those lines.
Cena winning the Rumble was unnecessary. Vince McMahon said that he is always looking toward the future, and Ryback becoming the World Heavyweight champion at WrestleMania would have been a smart move.
Since winning his first WWE title back in 2005, Cena has only lost (roughly) seven PPV matches cleanly. Seven clean losses in eight years? Give me a break!
2. "I Hate John Cena Because He Cuts Immature Promos"
2 of 5For every truly compelling Cena promo, there are about 10 that make you feel embarrassed to be a professional wrestling fan.
When Cena is serious, he is one of the best at cutting promos and getting the WWE Universe fired up, but when he fools around, makes immature jokes and cuts childish promos, it's very hard to watch.
There isn't much else I can say about this topic. Just watch the video above, and try not to look away.
3. "I Hate John Cena Because of His Superman Gimmick/Bland Character"
3 of 5Cena is often hated for the fact that he has a Supermanlike gimmick. However, fans need to understand that since the WWE is TV-PG, Cena needs to continue fighting and acting the same way because children in the audience view him as a hero and a role model. Who wants to see Superman or Batman get their ass kicked every week?
To a lot of younger viewers, Cena IS Superman.
With that said, I have to agree with most of the Cena haters that the "Super Cena" gimmick is getting old and extremely bland.
I used to make the argument that The Undertaker kicks out of countless finishers before claiming a victory, but Cena is different because he hasn't changed up his character and is wrestling on a nightly basis. He's played the same exact character for five or six years and hasn't changed anything at all.
Who cares if Cena kicks out of multiple finishers at a PPV? That builds drama and excitement to matches. But when Cena kicks out of multiple finishers on Raw, I can't help but find that annoying.
Since Cena kicks out of finishers on Raw and at PPVs, when CM Punk hits him with a GTS, it's obvious that he is going to kick out.
Cena being indestructible is a respectable reason to hate or dislike him.
4. "I Hate John Cena Because He Barely Sells"
4 of 5WWE fans hate Cena for the fact that he barely sells during and after his matches. One of the best examples of Cena and his no-selling antics came moments after his main event victory over Brock Lesnar at Extreme Rules 2012.
The following was reported by PWInsider.com:
"The original plan was for Cena, despite winning, to be so beaten that he was carried out of the building, leaving an opening for Lesnar to brag that while he had lost the battle on a fluke, he had won the war.
When Cena decided to address the audience, Lesnar perceived it as Cena double crossing him and lost in on WWE officials.
"
Apparently, Cena's lack of selling not only upsets certain members of the WWE Universe, but other professional wrestlers as well. It is viewed as the ultimate form of disrespect.
5. "I Hate John Cena Because He Is a 13-Time World Champion"
5 of 5Cena is not one of the greatest wrestlers to ever lace up a pair of boots in the WWE, but by the end of his career, he will be.
Fellow Bleacher Report Featured Columnist Ryan Dilbert wrote a beautiful column in which he explained that the number of World Titles Cena has won throughout his career is absolutely absurd. I tend to agree with him.
Right now, Cena has won 13 World Titles (11 WWE Titles), and it doesn't look like he's slowing down anytime soon. Within a few years, he may have more than 17, which would break the record for most World Title reigns, held by Ric Flair.
Cena is a great role model, WWE ambassador and professional wrestler to a lot of people around the world, but when you look at guys like Shawn Michaels (4) and The Undertaker (7), who have only held a handful of World Titles throughout their careers, Cena's number of reigns is beyond ridiculous.
There you have it: five respectable reasons why WWE fans hate Cena.
For those of you who still do not have a crystal clear perception of our WWE champion, perhaps hearing the other side of the argument, "John Cena: 5 Ridiculous Reasons Why People Hate the WWE Champion", will help persuade you into becoming a Cena fan or a bonafide Cena hater.
