Confederations Cup 2013 Results: Full Breakdown of Tables and Upcoming Matches

Justin OnslowJun 1, 2018

All eight teams in the 2013 Confederations Cup have played one match, and with the opening action now in the books, it has become even more clear which teams are poised to make a run at the title in the coming weeks.

As expected, Brazil, Spain, Italy and Nigeria all came away with wins in the first round of group play, highlighted by a 3-0 Brazil drubbing of Japan and an absolute blowout win for Nigeria, trouncing Tahiti 6-1 on Monday.

All four teams took a decided lead in the group tables with three points apiece, but eight more matches remain before the semifinals. A lot can change before now and June 23.

Brazil vs. Mexico

Where: Estadio Castelao; Fortaleza, Brazil

When: Wednesday, June 19, at 3 p.m. ET

Television/Streaming: ESPN and Watch ESPN

Mexico is entering dangerous territory, not just in the Confederations Cup but also in World Cup qualifiers. If the Mexican side can’t find a way to right the ship—and in a hurry—they’ll be staring down an early exit from both competitions.

With a 2-1 loss to Italy in the opening game, Mexico put themselves in a tricky situation. Facing a confident host in Brazil, a loss and an Italy win would bounce Mexico from the Confederations Cup and bring up even more questions about their ability to compete at the international level right now.

Brazil is fresh off a 3-0 victory over Japan in the first match of the tournament—a match some believed would be a lot closer than it was. While Japan may be an underrated team, they certainly didn’t seem capable of hanging with the favorites to triumph on their home soil.

Brazil has command of the top of the Group A tables, and with a win over Mexico Wednesday, they’ll be in prime position to escape the group stage in the same position.

This match will also be a good opportunity for fans to get another look at Brazilian star Neymar on the international stage. Despite overwhelming hype, the striker backed up his stardom with a tremendous goal in the third minute against Japan, giving fans even more reason to settle in for this Group A tilt.

If Gerardo Flores struggles to contain Neymar in this match, Mexico will be in for another long contest and a potentially devastating result.

Prediction: Brazil 3, Mexico 2

Italy vs. Japan

Where: Arena Pernambuco; Recife, Brazil

When: Wednesday, June 19, at 6 p.m. ET

Television/Streaming: ESPN and Watch ESPN

If Japan can rebound from a 3-0 loss to Brazil in the opener with a win over Italy, Group A will be up for grabs. Brazil will be hard to catch at the top of the tables, but the second spot is certainly fair game at this point in the tournament.

For Italy, a win will virtually clinch a berth in the knockout stage after running Mexico 2-1 on Sunday. The stakes are high for both sides, but the Italians have a little more breathing room and a lot more to gain.

But Italy coach Cesare Prandelli isn’t overlooking his squad’s opponent. As quoted at FIFA.com, Prandelli believes Japan will have an edge in the match:

"

Japan will have the slight edge, I think, because they have an extra day of rest. Plus, Alberto knows us very well, he knows how we work. I expect him to prepare a trap for us. From tonight, we will begin planning for the Japan game. I trust that he will come up with an interesting strategy against us.

"

Japan hold the distinction of being both underrated and overrated. As a largely overlooked team, the Japanese side are a favorite upset pick in almost every match. Unfortunately, they also haven’t lived up to the billing, despite showing flashes of excellent football in the opening match with Brazil.

Japan can’t afford to let this one slip away. A loss to Italy will all but ensure an early exit from the Confederations Cup.

Prediction: Italy 1, Japan 1
