Velasquez vs Silva 2: Where Does UFC 160 Rank Among 2013's Pay-Per-View Cards

Andrew SaundersJun 8, 2018

On Saturday night, Cain Velasquez and Junior dos Santos solidified their rankings as the best heavyweight fighters on the planet. Their knockout wins were the cherry on top of one of the best cards in recent memory.

Anyone who saw UFC 160 knows that it was a non-stop thrill ride that showcased some of the best fighters on the planet performing to the best of their game. However, how does it stack up against the other pay-per-views of 2013?

Here is a power ranking of the best UFC pay-per-views of 2013.

Author's Note: Because we are identifying the amount of excitement you get for your dollar, only fights that were scheduled to air on the main card were considered when ranking these cards.

5. UFC 156

1 of 5

UFC 156 had enough star power to be the one of the biggest cards of the year. However, with less-than-thrilling matchups from Rashad Evans vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and Joseph Benavidez vs. Ian McCall, the first half of the pay-per-view was lackluster to say the least.

The main event delivered exciting action in a superfight between longtime featherweight champion Jose Aldo and former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar. The battle won Fight of the Night honors, but it didn't have much competition.

One highlight from this card saw a stellar knockout from Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva over Alistair Overeem, but it came after two rounds of forgettable action in which Overeem didn't seem like himself.

Also on the main card, Demian Maia showed his grappling dominance against Jon Fitch in a fight that was described as Maia "out-Fitching" Fitch. For anyone unfamiliar with the work on Jon Fitch, from an excitement standpoint, that is not a compliment.

4. UFC 159

2 of 5

At UFC 159, Jon Jones dominated in the most predictable main event of the year against undeserving challenger Chael Sonnen. The one-sided pummeling capped off an evening marred by poor refereeing decisions and accidental fouls.

In the evening's co-main event, Michael Bisping outclassed Alan Belcher for nearly three rounds before an errant eye poke called a stop to the action.

Fans who may have been in need of a nap were lucky to avoid seeing a forgettable matchup between Phil Davis and Vinny Magalhaes.

Highlights of the main card include a great fight between Pat Healy and Jim Miller (which was later changed to a no-contest), and Roy Nelson picked up an impressive knockout win over Cheick Kongo.

3. UFC 157

3 of 5

With an iconic main event between Ronda Rousey and Liz Carmouche, UFC 157 easily could have crashed and burned once the cameras started rolling. However, Rousey lived up to her incredible hype by being able to avoid early trouble and eventually latch onto her signature armbar for yet another first-round victory.

Lowlights of this event include a heavily disappointing affair between Dan Henderson and Lyoto Machida, as well as a drawn out welterweight debut from Court McGee, who was unable to finish an exhausted Josh Neer despite giving him fits early on.

Urijah Faber looked to be in peak form when he scored a quick rear-naked choke victory over an always-tough Ivan Menjivar, and the main card kicked off with a massive upset after Robbie Lawler returned to the Octagon with a knockout of Josh Koscheck.

For the sake of this list, we are not including undercard action. However, it is notable that the best fight of the year happened on this card when Dennis Bermudez and Matt Grice threw down on the FX prelims.

2. UFC 158

4 of 5

Three welterweight wars were booked to headline UFC 158, and each of those matchups delivered tremendous excitement.

In the evening's main event, Georges St-Pierre met Nick Diaz in a grudge match for the UFC championship. Once again, GSP was unable to secure a finish, although it was tremendously satisfying as a fan to see this feud resolved.

Co-main event fighters Johny Hendricks and Carlos Condit delivered a Fight of the Year candidate in a fight that was ultimately scored as a unanimous decision in favor of Hendricks.

In addition, Jake Ellenberger displayed his power striking when he brutally knocked out Nate Marquardt in the middle fight of the main card.

This card might have taken top honors in our countdown, however, the opening two fights bored anyone who was willing to part ways with their hard-earned dollars for this event. Chris Camozzi and Nick Ring fought to a split decision, while Mike Ricci defeated Colin Fletcher in a matchup between TUF runner-ups.

1. UFC 160

5 of 5

Five fights, four stoppages and one brutal beatdown. That's a quick summation of the UFC 160 main card.

To be more specific, Cain Velasquez quickly knocked out Antonio Silva to once again prove himself as the baddest heavyweight fighter on the planet.

Just prior to that, Junior dos Santos and Mark Hunt met in a fight that was a dream come true for many fans. Not only did these monsters turn in the greatest fight in UFC heavyweight history, but the fight had an outstanding finish with less than one minute on the clock as JDS landed a spinning back kick to KO the Super Samoan.

In the third fight of the main card, white-hot prospect Glover Teixeira picked up a quick and decisive victory over James Te Huna. The Brazilian choked out Te Huna with a guillotine choke in the first round, which brings him one step closer to a long-desired title shot.

In case that wasn't enough, T.J. Grant established himself as a member of the lightweight elite when he quickly and brutally knocked out two-time title challenger Gray Maynard.

Just to prove that there weren't any lowlights on the main card, the PPV kicked off with an exciting and bloody matchup between Donald Cerrone and former Elite XC champion K.J. Noons.
