Which Team is Really a Brett Favre Away from the Super Bowl?

William Del PilarApr 29, 2009

Where does former Green Bay and future Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre sign if he decides to come back?

For the record, he came out and said:

“Nothing has changed. At this time, I am retired and have no intention of returning to football.”

Personally, I believe Favre is the most overrated quarterback in modern times.

Sure he has the numbers…in the regular season.

In a crunch-time game with playoff implications? He’s the last quarterback I would want leading the charge. He’s reckless and makes too many mistakes when everything’s on the line, as his playoff history shows!

Despite that, I’d like to see Favre play for a few teams in the NFL as he would make it fun to watch, and he could be the final piece to a Super Bowl run for some teams.

So which teams are a Brett Favre away from a Super Bowl? Let’s break it down:

AFC East

  • Buffalo Bills: Too young, pressing needs everywhere, including quarterback. However, they are nowhere near being Super Bowl ready. The Bills are a rebuilding team.
  • Miami Dolphins: See the Buffalo Bills!
  • New England Patriots: This one is an interesting conversation topic: What if Tom Brady doesn’t return to form? Bill Belichick would probably not take to Favre as it’s Belichick’s team, and no player is above him.

He would not take well to Favre’s shenanigans with the media, and, for the record, Favre can’t carry Brady’s jockstrap! That’s how much better a quarterback Brady is. I also think Favre would struggle with the playbook and eventually be benched because of too many turnovers.
  • New York Jets: Favre’s former team is already moving on with Mark Sanchez.

AFC North

  • Baltimore Ravens: This team is a Brett Favre away from the Super Bowl, but the Ravens are moving forward with the new face of their franchise, Joe Flacco.

Calm and collected, he is learning how to manage a game and when to put the team on his back. Favre would disrupt that process. The Ravens are hoping to find an elite receiver, they’re not looking for a quarterback.
  • Cincinnati Bengals: This team is just bad and will never attract a  player who yearns for a championship in the twilight of his career, only players who still want or need a paycheck.
  • Cleveland Browns: See the Miami Dolphins.
  • Pittsburgh Steelers: Obviously the league’s best franchise has no need for an aging gunslinger who makes mistakes at the worst possible moments.

AFC South

  • Houston Texans: See the Cleveland Browns.
  • Indianapolis Colts: They have a quarterback who is better than Favre could ever hope to be.
  • Jacksonville Jaguars: This one is interesting as the Jaguars run a vanilla offense (read: easy to learn), were Super Bowl favorites last year, and, when healthy, can hang with any team. I wonder if Jacksonville would be flashy enough for Favre.

It’s not the Big Apple and doesn’t have the history or mystique of Green Bay. The team also has David Garrard, who just signed a new contract two years ago, and because of that, they have no reason to tie up more cap space at the position.

I don’t view Garrard as any better or worse than Favre. Favre’s Achilles’ heel is turnovers at crunch time. I don’t think Jack Del Rio would handle that well as the season went along.
  • Tennessee Titans: They could use a Brett Favre, but in the end the Jets did not make the playoffs and the Kerry Collins-led Titans did. Collins is a better veteran quarterback who knows what his role is.

That has always been Favre’s problem: He never knows when to be a star and put the team on his back and when to let the team put him on their backs. Collins knows the difference.

AFC West

In the end, as you can see, there are not many, if any, options in the AFC. Tomorrow we’ll look at the NFC, and yes, I do agree, the Minnesota Vikings and Favre should be drooling at a possible one-year marriage!
