20 Biggest Sports Records That Will Be Broken Soon
Every sports fan loves streaks and records, but as impressive as some of them are, let's face it, they're meant to be broken.
An athlete may never actually admit to trying to go for an individual goal like scoring titles, league MVPs or career assists, but it's only natural that once they're within striking distance, they'll try to accomplish the feat.
So even though we think some records are absolutely unbreakable, we're giving you the ones that are more than likely going to be broken within the next few years.
Most Women's Grand Slam Titles
1 of 20With a record 22 career singles Grand Slam titles in the Open Era, former tennis player Steffi Graf still has a sizable lead over some of the active athletes going now.
But in our opinion, we still see the record falling thanks to Serena Williams and her 15 career singles titles.
Serena may be 31 years old and has some other ventures going on away from the game, but she's still one of the most feared tennis players any time she steps on the court.

NBA Career Points Leader
2 of 20Maybe this is just wishful thinking in hopes that Kobe Bryant—who currently sits fourth on the league's all-time scoring list—returns from his Achilles injury, but hear us out before turning this one down.
Though Mamba has hinted towards retirement recently, that was before his major injury occurred late this year.
We all know he's not one to turn down a challenge, so we have our fingers crossed that he recovers and plays another four to five more years, putting up 20-plus points per game to chase down Kareem.
Prediction: April, 2017
NHL Most Points by a Euro-Born Player
3 of 20We admit that this one might be one of the more difficult records to be broken on this list.
The first reason is that Jaromir Jagr—who currently holds the record—is actually still playing, only adding to his first-place total.
The second is that it's all based on assumptions with guys like Alex Ovechkin and Ilya Kovalchuk.
Patience will be key with this one, but it will eventually happen.
Prediction: March, 2018
NFL Career Interceptions
4 of 20Though this record took a major hit at being broken when former Pro Bowl safety Darren Sharper called it quits a couple seasons ago, we still think it's going to happen sooner rather than later.
Newly-signed Texans safety Ed Reed currently sits atop the active leaders in picks with 61—which is still 20 off the record—so if it's not Reed who does it, look for a guy like Asante Samuel or another dark horse contender to overtake Paul Krause's 30-plus year record.
Prediction: October, 2017
Lakers' 33-Game Win Streak
5 of 20We wrote about how the Lakers' 33-game winning streak was almost untouchable earlier this year, but after seeing the Heat roll to 27 straight, we think it can be challenged.
What the Miami streak showed us is how incredibly difficult it can be to string together any amount of wins in a row—especially with the constant media these days.
But knowing how good that team can be when they really want to be, we wouldn't put anything past them—as they're hands-down the only team that can reach that kind of gear to break it.
Prediction: March, 2014
MLB Career for Strikeouts (Batter)
6 of 20We almost added just the single-season strikeout record here—especially after seeing Adam Dunn fall just one called strike away from tying it last season—but, alas, we just think the "Big Donkey" will whiff so many more times in his career that he'll actually fall into infamy for it.
Dunn's career has been defined as "boom-or-bust," hitting some of the longest homers we've ever seen, while giving fans on the first base side in the stands a cool breeze during those hot summer days.
With just over 500 more to go to break Reggie Jackson's record, and still just 33 years old, we wouldn't be shocked if Dunn sets the new mark in the next couple of seasons.
Prediction: August, 2015
Most First-Round NFL Picks from a College
7 of 20We're not sure what they serve in the water down in Tuscaloosa, but at this point in his time down there, it's clear Nick Saban is running a damn minor league football program.
That's why we can say with conviction that he'll set a record for players selected in the first round of the NFL draft—considering what he's done since being at Bama.
Even with other programs continuing to build their resumes of first-rounders, Saban and the Tide have numerous selections each year, pushing them closer to Southern Cal's record.
Prediction: April, 2017
NFL Single-Season Rushing Record
8 of 20Do we really think Adrian Peterson will prove his prediction right and rush for 2,500 yards in 2013?
Our gut is saying no, but thanks to our eyes and what we've seen him do in his career thus far, he may just go out and do it.
Regardless of "AD" getting to 2,500 or not, he wound up missing the single-season record by just eight yards this past season, and that was after an offseason of rehabbing from a torn ACL.
If anyone does it today, we think it'll be Peterson, so whether that's this year or down the road, look for him to challenge it again.
Prediction: December, 2013
MLB Most Saves in a Season
9 of 20Though no one ever can tell how often a closer may get a save opportunity in one season, this record is bound to be broken because it's just one of those fluke-type things.
The current number is 62 saves in a season by Francisco Rodriguez during his 2008 season, and we constantly see guys get a chance at 70-plus appearances in a season to at least challenge this.
Since sometimes all a pitcher has to be is lucky than be good to get a save, we think this is doomed—it's just a question of when that will be?
Prediction: October, 2014
Pittsburgh Pirates Most Consecutive Losing Seasons
10 of 20Now this is one streak or record that we're sure Pittsburgh fans just can't wait to have end.
After setting the record for the most losing seasons in a row by a franchise with 20, wouldn't it just be nice for the Bucs to get over the hump and finish above .500?
We're not saying they have to win their division or even nab a Wild Card spot in the playoffs, just as long as they put their futility of losing behind them.
Prediction: October, 2013
NBA Worst Free-Throw Percentage (Season)
11 of 20Let's get this straight—in our minds, there's no way in hell a professional basketball player should only be able to sink 33% of his season's free-throw attempts.
Now that we got that off our chest, we still think there will be a guy who breaks Ben Wallace's paltry record for lowest free-throw percentage in a season.
After seeing this free throw by the Clippers' DeAndre Jordan—along with other absolutely miserable attempts—sadly this is one that will make all shooting coaches rip their hair out.
Prediction: April, 2014
MLB Career Postseason Shutouts
12 of 20With Christy Mathewson holding the current record of four postseason shutouts in a career for 100 years now, there's good reason to think this will fall.
On top of pitching becoming downright dominating over the past couple of years, the addition of more playoff games will naturally push Mathewson aside.
Hell, Dodgers pitcher Josh Beckett already has three career playoff shutouts in his career.
Prediction: October, 2014
NCAA Football Career Passing Yards
13 of 20Don't be fooled by the picture of Clemson's Tajh Boyd here.
Though he has had a solid career in terms of passing numbers—and plays in an offense that uses the spread attack—he won't be the one to break this record.
But that's what makes this one so beautiful, because we don't know who it will be.
With younger guys getting a chance to play earlier these days, we have a good feeling that in three or four years, we'll have a new record holder.
Prediction: January, 2015
NBA Most Wins in a Season
14 of 20Most sports fans can argue about who the best teams ever were.
After seeing the '95-96 Chicago Bulls though, we have to nominate them as earning the top spot after finishing with an NBA-best record of 72-10 and capping it with a Finals win.
As great as those Bulls were though, the NBA has quickly become a best friends league—as in, the best players in the league are all best friends, and want to all play together.
In an age of super teams, there may be one that focuses solely on breaking the 72-win mark, making it very viable to actually happen.
Prediction: April, 2015
Most Goals in La Liga Season
15 of 20At just 25 years old, we've already seen Lionel Messi accomplish some serious feats in his career.
One of those great records is the most goals scored in a La Liga season, which he set last season when he netted 50 scores.
After putting in another 46 this season, who knows where he can go next year?
With a personal rivalry going on between him and Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo for the title of best player in the world, these two will continue to up the ante in achieving one of the great goal-scoring records in soccer—assuming C-Ron doesn't bolt from Madrid this offseason for another league.
Prediction: May, 2014
NFL Single-Season Sacks
16 of 20With NFL teams relying more and more on the play of their quarterbacks, it's only natural that the more dropbacks a guy has, the more opportunities pass-rushers have to pin back their ears and attack the pocket.
For that reason alone, we can see a guy like J.J. Watt, Aldon Smith or Jared Allen passing Michael Strahan's regular season sack record—but hopefully it comes without as much controversy as when the former Giants defensive end achieved it.
Prediction: December, 2013
NBA Career Playoff Games Played
17 of 20OK, so this one is absolutely going to get broken.
Although Derek Fisher fell short in accomplishing the feat this year after his Thunder team got bounced in the second round by the Grizzlies, as long as he returns to a playoff team next season, he'll set the new mark—trailing former 'mate Robert Horry by just four games.
If Fisher doesn't find a home next year, it's not completely out of the equation that Kobe Bryant actually overtakes Horry as early as next season either.
Prediction: April, 2014
NFL Career Passing Touchdowns
18 of 20Assuming Peyton Manning signed a five-year deal with the Broncos last offseason—surely earning his last contract of his NFL career—we're giving him the over here on breaking Brett Favre's career touchdown passes mark.
Left with just 72 to catch Favre, we'd say Manning is good to toss an average of 18 per season for the remainder of that deal.
Peyton's so good that he could probably do that in his sleep.
Prediction: December, 2014
NBA League MVPs
19 of 20Now that LeBron James has collected his fourth league MVP award, he's in good company as far as breaking the all-time record for most Maurice Podoloff Trophies.
Trailing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar by just two—and still only 28 years old—James has established himself as the greatest player on the planet, specifically in the past two seasons.
Just entering his prime (scary, isn't it?), look for Bron to just keep adding these things to his mantel.
Prediction: May, 2015
NFL Consecutive Games with a TD Pass
20 of 20After the Saints' Drew Brees broke the 52-year record held by Johnny Unitas just last year—which has since ended—next in line to catch the new streak is Tom Brady, as he's tossed a touchdown pass in 47 straight contests.
Considering Belichick and the Pats let "Tom Terrific" do anything he wants to when it comes to passing the football, Brady should wrap this one up by the sixth game of the upcoming season.
Prediction: October, 2013
