Liverpool's New Home Kit: Legends Ian Rush and Alan Kennedy Give Their Opinion

Karl MatchettJun 8, 2018

Liverpool took the first steps toward planning for the 2013-14 season recently, with the announcement and introduction of their new first-choice kit launch. Made by Warrior Sports and with the main sponsors as Standard Chartered, it marks a second consecutive season with that particular combination adorning the kits of Liverpool Football Club.

As always, of course, the home kit's predominant colour is red, with yellow writing and a change with some white detailing on the neckline and sleeves.

The goalkeeper's kit, this year worn by Pepe Reina and Brad Jones, is a white design with shaded black vertical lines.

The players took turns modelling the new jersey at the kit launch, where the likes of Steven Gerrard, Lucas Leiva and Glen Johnson had plenty to say on the look and feel of the shirt. Gerrard, the club captain, said:

"I'm really happy with it, with the colours and the fit, it's really comfortable. I think they've improved it on last year's kit which is always nice and I'm excited and looking forward to wearing them."

Warrior representatives spoke about staying true to the heritage and history of the club and how they took their inspiration from the '70s and '80s eras when the club was so successful.

Club legend and all-time record goalscorer Ian Rush was in full agreement, speaking about the similarities to the 1983-84 kit which he wore during his first spell at the club.

"

I think we won three trophies that year ['84] and we had a fantastic season. When you're successful everyone remembers the kit you wore, so hopefully it brings Liverpool a bit of luck for next season and I'm sure the supporters will love it. It's important the club's past successes are represented in some way, it gives you something to hold onto and we want to get back to that level again. It brings back memories of the older generation and lets fans believe we'll be that successful again.

"

Liverpool won the League Championship, the League Cup and the European Cup in the 1983-84 season.

Rush wasn't the only former great who spoke about the kit, with Alan Kennedy also giving his take on the shirt and agreeing that it brought back memories and had "shades of '84."

The home-kit launch certainly seems to have gone down well with the players, former and current alike; now the supporters will get their say and above all else will hope that it inspires the present-day team to greater heights whilst wearing it next season, as they look to build on the debut campaign of manager Brendan Rodgers.
