Record Spring Game Crowd Witnesses Pryor's Passing Progress

Tim BielikApr 27, 2009

With a record-crowd of 95,722 in attendance, Terrelle Pryor showed off his improved passing abilities by throwing two deep TD passes at the end of the first half, helping the Gray team to a 23-3 victory over the Scarlet team.

Pryor connected with junior WR Taurian Washington on a phenomenal 44-yard bomb, and senior WR Ray Small weaved his way through the Scarlet secondary to his touchdown.

Shockingly, Pryor did not look to run as much as he did in his freshman year, staying in the pocket on most occasions.

Pryor's total statline: 13-19 for 191 yards and two TDs. He did not take a snap in the second half.

After the first quarter, Pryor became a live target, but that didn't stop him from having an efficient day in the pocket.

Other tidbits from the Spring Game:

—DE Thaddeus Gibson showed his strong finish last year was no fluke, sacking Pryor twice in the first half off the right OT.

—RB Brandon Saine is going to challenge Dan Herron for the starting RB job, and he looked really good as well. Saine broke off numerous big runs throughout the game and showed his ability to run from the hand-off, as well as catch the ball out in the field.

—If the performances of LBs Brian Rolle and Etienne Sabino are any indication on the LB corps, Ohio State is as deep as they've been in a long time. Rolle and Sabino combined for 20 tackles, and LB/S Tyler Moeller was a disruptive force in the pass rush.

—G Justin Boren and C Mike Brewster could very well be the anchors of an offensive line looking to rebound to prominence. And if they continue to play as nasty and physical as they did in the game, the line will be just fine.

—One promising sign of the Gray offense was the ability to throw in the middle of the field, which was where most of Washington's and Small's catches were through the course of the game.

-Sophomore WR Devier Posey, who some felt looked like Randy Moss in spring practice, is well on his way to becoming the No. 1 receiver in the offense. He showed great hands and the ability to get yards after the catch.

—If Lamaar Thomas can catch kickoffs, he may just be a gem on special teams. If he can't, look for freshman WR James Jackson to take his place, as he looked very impressive, showing speed and great hands in his time on the field.

—The secondary is a huge question mark, as CB Chimdi Chekwa really struggled against the Gray receivers. If that's the case, good luck against USC's Damian Williams.

—Conversely, the strength of the defense looks more and more like the front four combined with a hard-hitting and fast LB corps. Gibson and sophomore Nathan Williams are athletic bookends, with DT Cameron Heyward continuing to be solid in the middle.

Final Point:

—Right now: the starting LBs for OSU should be:

                             Homan           Sabino           Rolle

with Moeller, senior Austin Spitler, LB/S Jermale Hines, and freshman LB Dorian Bell rotating. Expect very little drop-off with these seven guys by mid-season.
