Kentucky Derby 2013 Video: Results, Recap and Highlights of Run for the Roses
Orb entered as the favorite of the Kentucky Derby and left as the 139th champion.
Of course, it was not without struggle. The winning horse had to overcome a number of obstacles during the race to secure the prestigious victory.
The first issue was the conditions. Thanks to constant raining throughout the day, the track at Churchill Downs had turned into mud.
In most horse races, muddy tracks tend to favor the long shots. The contending horses usually got to that point by winning on fast courses, while the wet conditions even the field. It also causes fluky things to happen like injuries to the top horses.
To make matters worse, Orb had not competed on a wet track in any of his previous seven races. This inexperience is certain to cause anyone to lose confidence.
Still, the horse ran a great race to take home the title, as you can see in this video:
If you watch from post No. 16 (fifth from the left), Orb got off to an awful start. By the :16 second mark of the video, he was well behind the pack as jockey Joel Rosario looked for a potential opening.
This continued for over half the race, as the horse was in 17th place after finishing three-quarters of a mile. He barely got into 15th place at the third turn.
However, that is when Rosario made his move. He pushed his horse to fifth by the end of the final turn, and then unleashed him to show off his pure speed on the straightaway.
By the time he crossed the finish line, there was no doubt as to which was the best horse in the field.
Most contenders do not like starting in one of the far outside posts. Orb began at No. 16, yet the young jockey was confident enough to casual get position and save his mount for the stretch run.
This was truly a spectacular performance by everyone involved in this team, and the winner was well-deserving of the title.
Golden Soul had a great showing to grab second, while three-time Kentucky Derby champion Calvin Borel rode Revolutionary to third place. Still, the focus remains on Orb after an impressive victory.
The only question that now remains is whether the horse can keep this momentum to win the Preakness and possibly the Belmont Stakes.
