Kentucky Derby 2013 Video: Complete Highlights of Entire Race
Orb won the 2013 Kentucky Derby on Saturday, and in doing so is the 139th different thoroughbred to etch his name into history at Churchill Downs.
Ridden by Joel Rosario and trained by first-time Derby winner Shug McGaughey, Orb was struggling to keep pace with the leaders around the first two turns when Rosario decided to kick it into high gear. He and Orb roared from the back of the pack to win the race by a full two—proving that strategy always trumps the start at the Derby.
The win was his fifth straight victory after winning a maiden race, and makes him an immediate favorite for the Preakness Stakes—the next step toward the elusive Triple Crown.
Orb was also the second horse in three years (Animal Kingdom in 2011) to win the Derby from the No. 16 post.
I could tell you all about it, but i'll let the video do most of the talking first.
Palace Malice was a surprisingly fast starter out of the gate, as was Oxbow, who managed to out-duel Revolutionary for position on the rail. Verrazano, Goldencents and Itsmyluckyday were also early leaders out of the gate, and took the lead into the final turn down to the back stretch.
But, as they say at the Derby, it's not how you start—it's how you finish.
None of the horses that were in the top five finished that way on Saturday, showing that the extra length to the track at Churchill Downs is truly a key in determining which horses should be considered favorites. Sprinters are important, but closers are more valuable to trainers at a track like this.
The muddy conditions at the track also made things tough on the jockeys when determining when to make a push.
Rosario decided that he would start pushing Orb harder right before the final turn, and the three-year-old thoroughbred stormed back around the rest of the field after being in the bottom five before that point.
Orb won by a clear two lengths, and he managed to do so by showing us all that he has the pedigree to handle the toils of a longer race, and both the sprinting ability to blow horses away at the two other tracks on the Triple Crown circuit.
Orb was the favorite before the race began, but was literally the weakest such holder of that title in the history of the event. As noted by ESPN Stats & Info, Orb's post-time odds were higher than any of his 138 fellow horses atop the favorites list:
While Orb's team celebrates, there's 18 other groups of people disappointed with their finish.

Among those are Todd Pletcher and his five horses in the race.
Revolutionary ended up being his best chance to win, climbing back on the inside rail after losing out to Oxbow out of the gate. Aside from that, Pletcher's Verrazano and Palace Malice both faded after hot starts, and Charming Kitten finished in the middle of the pack.
Other storylines included Gary Stevens and Calvin Borel missing out on Derby win No. 4, Kevin Krigger missing out on breaking the century-old streak of having an African American jockey winner and Rosie Napravnik being the first woman jockey to win the race.
Napravnik might not have succeeded (fifth place finish), but she did break her own record for a woman's finish in the Derby (previously ninth) and continues to rise through the jockey ranks.
That's the hard thing to grasp about the Kentucky Derby—all but one are going home losers.
As it is, the 139th Run for the Roses did not disappoint. We'll keep a watchful eye on Orb as the Preakness and Belmont Stakes approach, largely because he's still in play to be the 12th Triple Crown winner in the illustrious history of the distinction.
