Kentucky Derby Results: Complete Standings for Entire Field

Rob GoldbergMay 4, 2013

The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports once again lived up to its name as Orb won the 139th Kentucky Derby.

Starting from the No. 16 post, the horse stayed in the middle of the pack throughout the race before coming on strong in the home stretch for the win.

The rain made the course quite muddy, but jockey Joel Rosario did not let that affect things as he led his horse into the winner's circle.

In second place was Golden Soul, which remained close throughout but could not do enough to overcome the eventual winner. Revolutionary also finished in the money by coming in third.

Orb came into the race as the 5-1 favorite after winning the Florida Derby. This is trainer Shug McGaughey's first Kentucky Derby win to add to a great career.

You can view the event in its entirety here:

Revolutionary also came into the race among the top contenders thanks to a win at the Louisiana Derby and the experience of jockey Calvin Borel. He has won at Churchill Downs three times in his career, but he was unable to do better than third in this one.

Goldencents had one of the more disappointing results after coming in with lofty expectations. It not only won the Santa Anita Derby, but trainer Doug O'Neill also won last year's Kentucky Derby with I'll Have Another. Unfortunately, it could not come through on Saturday.

Todd Pletcher, who trained five horses in the race, must also be disappointed to see none of them finish on top. At least Revolutionary was able to take third place to avoid a complete shutout for the experienced trainer.

Still, Orb is the focus of the hour after finishing first in this prestigious race.

It remains to be seen if it can continue its quest for the Triple Crown on May 18 at the Preakness Stakes, but the one certainty is that the pressure is now on after winning the Kentucky Derby.
