2013 Kentucky Derby Lineup: Projecting Entire Finishing Order
With rain falling on the track at Churchill Downs and more rain in the forecast, the 2013 Kentucky Derby promises to be a memorable race.
CNN Weather Center advises anyone attending the race to bring plenty of rain gear:
The racing enthusiasts at Churchill Downs aren't the only ones that will be affected by the inclement weather. Mud will fly in the faces of horses and jockeys alike throughout the mile-and-a-quarter race, which could be disastrous for some of the horses that haven't faced conditions like these before.
That said, the sloppy track and difficult conditions will make the wreath of roses all the sweeter for the winning horse and jockey.
The weather has also affected betting lines.
Orb was the favorite after the draw on Wednesday with 7-2 odds. Since then, however, Revolutionary and Goldencents have jumped ahead of Orb while Orb has been moved back to 7-1.
Itsmyluckyday is another horse that has seen his line move, as the poor track-loving horse is now being given 9-1 odds after opening at 15-1.
Here's how I see this year's Derby playing out:
| 1 | Revolutionary | 5-1 | 3 |
| 2 | Itsmyluckyday | 9-1 | 12 |
| 3 | Oxbow | 22-1 | 2 |
| 4 | Orb | 7-1 | 16 |
| 5 | Goldencents | 6-1 | 8 |
| 6 | Overanalyze | 14-1 | 9 |
| 7 | Palace Malice | 24-1 | 10 |
| 8 | Verrazano | 9-1 | 14 |
| 9 | Normandy Invasion | 7-1 | 5 |
| 10 | Mylute | 13-1 | 6 |
| 11 | Will Take Charge | 30-1 | 17 |
| 12 | Giant Finish | 38-1 | 7 |
| 13 | Java's War | 23-1 | 19 |
| 14 | Frac Daddy | 23-1 | 18 |
| 15 | Vyjack | 34-1 | 20 |
| 16 | Golden Soul | 30-1 | 4 |
| 17 | Lines of Battle | 33-1 | 11 |
| 18 | Falling Sky | 37-1 | 13 |
| 19 | Charming Kitten | 29-1 | 15 |
Why Revolutionary Will Win
Revolutionary is a big, strong horse with enough stamina to press the pace the entire way, and his hard-charging demeanor will serve him well on the wet track. This is a horse that has overcome adversity throughout his career, and the mud won't hurt him one little bit.
This horse won by a neck at Withers and in the Louisiana Derby.
ESPN.com's Bob Ehalt noted that this ability to overcome adversity in both of those races will serve Revolutionary well at the Derby and added: "It doesn't hurt, either, just in case Mother Nature decides to drop some rain on the sport's Old Kentucky Home, that he has the pedigree to love mud."
When the post position draw put Revolutionary at No. 3 on Wednesday, many thought landing near the rail would hurt this horse's chances of winning.
Then, Black Onyx was scratched, which left one less horse to contend with on the inside. Pat Forde of Yahoo! Sports seemed to think this development would help Revolutionary's cause:
Now, with a muddy track and more rain in the forecast, this race is Revolutionary's to win. Jockey Calvin "Bo-rail" Borel is adept at winning from the inside, and he was the man responsible for Mine That Bird's improbable victory at the Derby in 2009—also on a sloppy track.
There are other horses with more raw speed than Revolutionary, but there isn't a horse better suited to win on a rainy day out on the dirt track at Churchill Downs.
