Contenders to Watch
Verrazano: 11-1
Verrazano is currently unbeaten heading into this Triple Crown competition but has a lot going against him in terms of history.
The colt is looking to become the first winner since Apollo in 1882 to win without being raced as a two-year-old. Every other champion since Apollo has cut its teeth in the prep races prior to their three-year-old campaigns.
Regardless, anyone who has seen Verrazano run knows that he has the pure speed, power and endurance required to win this 10-furlong race. He destroyed the field at the Tampa Bay Derby and put together a solid win against a tough field in the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct.
His inexperience may hurt him down the stretch, which is why you should bet Verrazano to show on Saturday.
Prediction: Show
Revolutionary: 5-1
This is the best horse-jockey-post position combination in the 2013 Kentucky Derby.
Revolutionary will be ridden by Calvin Borel and will start out of the No. 3 hole at Churchill Downs. Considering Borel is known for his rail-riding exploits to claim the blanket of roses for his mount, he’s already in perfect position to make his move to the front.
It’s also worth noting that Black Onyx, the horse that drew the No. 1 post, was scratched and will not be replaced prior to the race.
That gives Revolutionary an even better look at the inside, and he should be able to use his elite speed to maneuver to the front of the pack from there.
Unfortunately, there’s another horse in the field that is simply too fast to be caught along the rail and will run away with the race, finishing ahead of both Revolutionary and Verrazano.
Prediction: Place
Goldencents: 5-1
Goldencents is the quickest horse in the race and will emerge victorious at Churchill Downs on Saturday evening.
During his epic Santa Anita Derby, the colt earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 105—a number that is superior to the top performances by favorite Orb (97), Verrazano (95), Revolutionary (93) and the rest of the contenders in this event.
That blazing speed will allow Goldencents to run wire-to-wire in the Kentucky Derby, as he can emerge quickly from the No. 8 post, take an early lead and continue to build on it over the 10-furlong sprint.
While his stamina could be an issue, that is the only thing holding Goldencents back from a multiple-length victory or hitting the board a nose or two ahead of the pack.
Prediction: Win
