There was a blistering pace set to this race, and Orb was content to sit back and let other run themselves out.
Normandy Invasion made the initial late charge to take the lead, but that charge proved to be too early as he started fading while Orb turned on the afterburners.
Orb overtook Normandy Invasion in plenty of time and, with the guidance of red-hot jockey Joel Rosario, he powered the rest of the way to the win.
Normandy Invasion fell all the way back to fourth, which is terrible for people betting on the horse, but not so bad for owner Rick Porter.
According to KentuckyDerby.com, the guaranteed purse for fourth place is $100,000. The guaranteed purse for the win was $1.24 million.
So, it appears as if the purses are coming in a little above the guaranteed.
With the wet conditions and the fast early pace, this race was all about horses starting their finishing kick at the right time. As we just talked about, Normandy Invasion began his too soon.
The top three finishers in this race were all hovering near the back as the horses were in the final turn.
This opened the door for the lightly heralded Golden Soul to storm into second. This is a horse that came out of nowhere—both with his his late charge and his position on the tote board. This must come much to the delight of owner Charles E. Fipke, who is looking at a guaranteed payday of $400,000.
Meanwhile, Mylute rounds out our money winners. He made a nice charge of his own, but was relegated to fifth, which will earn his owners $60,000.
It's better luck next race for the rest of the horse's and owners. Now it's time to turn our attention to the Preakness and think about which horses will be in contention for the next major horse-racing event of the year.
