Revolutionary Is X-Factor with Calvin Borel's Presence in 2013 Kentucky Derby

Maxwell OgdenJun 8, 2018

The 2013 Kentucky Derby is just days away, as the top three-year-old thoroughbreds prepare to come together for the first leg of the Triple Crown. As the oddsmakers attempt to decide upon which horse will win, however, one name is worth knowing above all else.

Led by three-time Kentucky Derby champion jockey Calvin Borel, that horse is Revolutionary.

Borel is one of the most decorated jockeys in the illustrious and lengthy history of horse racing. Perhaps most important of all, most of Borel's success has come within the past six calendar years.

In other words, he's far from past his prime.

Borel won the Kentucky Derby for the first time in 2007, riding Street Sense. Two years later, Borel won the 2009 Kentucky Derby and 2009 Preakness Stakes riding Mine That Bird and Rachel Alexandra, respectively.

In case you aren't getting the picture, it doesn't matter what horse Borel is riding—he's a pure winner.

One year later, he confirmed that notion with another glorious moment.

In 2010, Borel became the first jockey to win back-to-back Kentucky Derbies since Eddie Delahoussaye in 1983. He did so while riding Super Saver, thus making it three titles in four years and his first with trainer Todd Pletcher.

In 2013, it just so happens that Borel will be riding another one of Pletcher's horses—Revolutionary.

As previously alluded to, the combination of Borel and Pletcher has already produced a win at the Kentucky Derby. On a horse that has built up tremendous momentum, it's hard to limit the possibility of a repeat in 2013.

Revolutionary has won three consecutive races, including the Louisiana Derby in late March.

With this in mind, it's fair to say that Borel isn't the only party with a full case of momentum. As a horse that has dominated the competition in recent events, it appears as if the proper guidance is the only thing necessary for a win at the Kentucky Derby.

Who better than Borel and Pletcher to provide just that?

There are no guarantees at the Kentucky Derby, and not even the tandem of Borel and Pletcher can create a case of certainty. When so much of this race is based off of playing angles and understanding the value of pace, however, there are few in the world more prepared to lead this victory.

Paired with a horse with power, speed and momentum, Borel, Pletcher and Revolutionary appear to be a Kentucky Derby match made in heaven.
