What TNA Has That No One Else Does: Really Weird To Me

Joe Burgett Apr 24, 2009

I was watching TNA iMPACT yesterday and saw something that seems to be over looked by others. I mean you see it all the time, but you just don't think about it when your watching.

You are so used to seeing some of this in other promotions that when you see it here, it really makes no impact in your mind. And that is TNA's overuse of nicknames. I mean over 90 percent of the roster has one.

Even if they come from another company like the WWE, ROH, etc. TNA will add a nickname to you sometimes.

When Jeff Hardy came to TNA a while back, he attained the Enigma nickname. It was the Extreme Enigma, and in the WWE it was known more as The Charismatic Enigma.

All of the TNA originals seem to have one.

  • "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles
  • "The Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels
  • "The Nation of Violence" or "Samoan Submission Machine" Samoa Joe
  • "Showtime" Eric Young
  • "Cowboy" James Storm
  • "The Hardcore Knockout"
  • "Black Machismo" Jay Lethal
  • "The Monster" Abyss
  • "The King of the Mountain" Jeff Jarrett

Now to be fair some of the men on the roster had nicknames before their arrival.

  • "The Icon" Sting
  • "Big Sexy" Kevin Nash
  • "The Olympic Gold Medalist" Kurt Angle

However some attained names when they arrived, or started wrestling with TNA.

  • "The Hardcore Legend" Mick Foley
  • "The Blue Print" Matt Morgan

Now, when you watch the WWE you see people refer to others during the match as the Hall of Famer or future Hall of Famer, The Game, HBK, The Phenom, etc.

But it is not added to their entrance usually, and the announcer does not say their nickname and name in the entrance. Nor is it on the name slot when they come out, ever.

Now, to be fair, during Shawn Michaels' entrance he is referred to as The Heart Break Kid Shawn Michaels.

But his is just about the only one in the WWE.

TNA has to many nicknames for their talent in my opinion. Forget the names I guess. I guess they do it for marketing reasons, but don't you think it is going a bit overboard?

When a guy just joins the roster like Trever Murdoch did yesterday. And you already give him a nickname, "The Outlaw", you have to think that is a bit too much.

At least Matt Morgan had to wrestle a few matches before getting his in TNA.

When it comes to tag teams, and their nicknames like:

  • Motor City Machine Guns
  • LAX
  • Team 3D
  • Beer Money Inc.
  • Lethal Consequences

That is OK if they say representing "....." But that is because they are a tag team. Not that they are using a nickname or something.

Team 3D had to change their name coming in because they were known as Bubby Ray and D-Von Dudley in the WWE, so they had to change it to Brother Ray and Brother D-Von.

In that case it is their name, so that is not so weird to me.

However, giving just about every person a nickname when they come in is absolutely weird to me.

I bet Bobby Lashley will soon have a nickname now that he is apart of the TNA roster. I have money on "The Machine", "The Gun", or "The Dominator".

Or maybe "The Pointer" because that is apparently all he knows how to do in TNA.

I just think that TNA needs to do things the old fashion way, and call people by their actual names. It is just really weird to me to hear a nickname before every single wrestler.

Guys like Shawn Michaels have earned a nickname, and so has Triple H, Undertaker, and others. I am sure it took them a while to get those names too.

To me just handing them out to any old Joe (no pun intended) is kind of dumb on TNA's part. What if they get released, don't live up to the name, etc?

Maybe it's just me.
