Horses to Watch
Orb
Orb is on fire. After finishing no better than third in his first three career races, the talented colt has secured four straight victories heading into the Derby. The latest wins came in the Grade 1 Florida Derby and the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes.
One of the key indicators heading into any big race is form—in other words, how a horse is performing right now. Few horses in the field will be able to match Orb in that area, which will probably make him a popular choice leading up to post time.
The other positive sign was how Orb handled the jockey change from Joel Rosario to John Velazquez. Little things like that can really throw some horses off, but he handled it well. It speaks well for his chance of handling the Derby spotlight.
Verrazano
Verrazano has generated plenty of buzz leading up to the Derby. He's probably the only horse who can match Orb's current form with four wins in as many starts and is getting stronger as he goes. Trainer Todd Pletcher just hopes he didn't peak too early.
Following a few low-key victories early in the year, the colt received his first true test in the Tampa Bay Derby. He outlasted Java's War and Falling Sky to pick up his third straight win. He stretched the streak to four in the Grade 1 Wood Memorial in early April.
He won't enter the Derby with as much experience as some of his counterparts, but there's always an allure associated with an undefeated horse. And he's been facing some serious competition, so it's not unreasonable to believe he can keep rolling on the sport's biggest stage.
Goldencents
Goldencents has been on the radar for awhile thanks to his connection to Louisville head basketball coach Rick Pitino, who's part of the ownership group. In fact, the horse's last victory came on the same day the Cardinals won their Final Four game.
That win came in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby, which was a key race for the colt. He was coming off a lackluster fourth-place showing in the San Felipe Stakes. Another poor outing would have led to serious questions about his Derby chances.
Instead, the win, which was the fourth of his career in six starts, put him right back among the top contenders. Trainer Doug O'Neill guided I'll Have Another to victories in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes last year. He'll try to do it again with Goldencents.
