Barkevious Mingo: Video Highlights for Former LSU DE
Possessing overwhelming athleticism at his position and sky-high potential, former LSU defensive end Barkevious Mingo will enter the 2013 NFL draft with the profile of a top-15 pick.
After posting 15 sacks and 29 tackles for loss over three years at LSU, Mingo blazed through the NFL combine and cemented his draft stock.
He impressively ran the 40-yard dash in 4.58 seconds (per NFL.com), despite measuring 6'4" and 241 pounds. Mingo also posted other top defensive end numbers in the vertical jump, broad jump and the three-cone drill.
For the most part, that athleticism translated to the football field while in Baton Rouge.
In the following slides, we'll present the top collegiate highlights from Mingo's career at LSU.
Impressive Pass Rush vs. Georgia, 2011
1 of 7Our first highlight may not have produced a sack, but it was an impressive display of agility and speed from Mingo.
With Georgia facing a third down in this 2011 contest, Mingo makes a mockery of the Bulldogs' right tackle. He sets up the blocker with a quick shoulder twitch inside, and then bursts to the outside shoulder to get around the edge in a flash.
Aaron Murray is eventually sacked, thanks in large part to Mingo's initial and immediate pressure.
Sack vs. Auburn, 2011
2 of 7There likely wasn't an easier sack in Mingo's career than this one against Auburn in 2011.
With the Tigers facing a manageable 3rd-and-2 situation, Auburn attempts to run a misdirection and throw to the tight end in the flat. However, the offense makes the regrettable mistake of not blocking Mingo on the backside.
Running free to the quarterback, Mingo makes the easy sack and forces a punt.
Sack No. 2 vs. Auburn, 2011
3 of 7Obviously, Auburn did not get the hint the first time Mingo received a free run at the quarterback.
Later in the first quarter, Mingo runs directly past the retreating left tackle and lays a powerful hit on the unsuspecting quarterback. Note his impressive closing speed from Point A to Point B.
Mingo's second sack marked the first time in his collegiate career he had registered two or more sacks in a game. LSU would win, big.
Strip-Sack vs. Mississippi State, 2011
4 of 7Here we see more of the pure speed from Mingo.
Late in the fourth quarter of a 2011 tilt with Mississippi State, Mingo fires off the football, disengages from the left tackle and then closes on the quarterback. While he's unable to hit the passer, he does strip away the football and seal the win for LSU.
The Tigers held on for a 19-6 win.
Sacking Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel, 2012
5 of 7Eventual Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel had his hands full with Mingo on this fourth-quarter play in 2012.
After pulling a tight end to deal with Mingo on the edge, Manziel attempts to escape the pocket to his right. Mingo has other plans, as he first forces Manziel inside and then drags him to the turf with just one arm.
Texas A&M would punt on the drive, as LSU eventually held on and beat the Aggies, 24-19.
Tackle for a Loss, Forced Fumble vs. Clemson, 2012
6 of 7One of Mingo's finest games of the 2012 season came in the Chick-fil-A-Bowl against Clemson.
Three of Mingo's five tackles came behind the line of scrimmage, including this one on just the second play of the contest.
Unblocked at the snap, Mingo reads the run, shows off his lateral agility and then blows up the ball-carrier, forcing a fumble in the process. LSU recovered and later scored.
Fourth-Quarter Sack vs. South Carolina, 2012
7 of 7This fourth-quarter sack helped LSU hold off a late charge from South Carolina in 2012.
With the Gamecocks facing a 2nd-and-8 deep in LSU territory, Mingo cleanly beat the mismatched right tackle and finished off the quarterback. Strong hand usage and bend were the catalysts of the sack.
South Carolina would eventually score, but LSU won the SEC battle, 23-21.
