Sanders Commings: Video Highlights for Former Georgia CB
Georgia's Sanders Commings is an intriguing tweener prospect who has experience playing both cornerback and safety over the course of his career so far.
At 6'2" and 216 pounds, Commings' versatility is something that will be absolutely invaluable at the NFL level.
Overshadowed by big names such as Alec Ogletree and Jarvis Jones, Commings finds himself as a mid-round selection—which means the team lucky enough to snag him will be getting a great value.
Let's take a few moments to highlight some of the best plays of Commings' career during his time at Georgia.
Interception vs. Louisiana-Lafayette, 2010
1 of 7In the above highlight, the Louisiana-Lafayette quarterback thought it would be a good idea to test Sanders Commings deep.
Bad idea.
Commings kept up with the intended receiver step for step all the way down the field after jamming him at the line. After that, Commings kept his head on a swivel and made the perfect play on the ball.
Also notice how Commings remains focused on the ball throughout the duration of the catch, at first bobbling it, but then having the awareness and body control to bring it back into his body for the turnover.
Interception vs. Vanderbilt, 2010
2 of 7The above highlight is the perfect blend of awareness and athleticism on full display by Sanders Commings.
Realizing that the Vanderbilt quarterback was in trouble, Commings passed his man off and sprinted to the only spot the ball would end up—after also properly diagnosing the play in front of him as a designed screen.
After that, the athleticism comes into play. The pass is horribly overthrown for where the intended receiver is and Sanders overcompensates.
That works out just fine because Sanders is an amazing athlete—as shown by his leaping interception here.
Sack vs. South Carolina, 2011
3 of 7Pretty simple play to break down here.
By design, Sanders Commings was asked to blitz the quarterback. Also by design, the South Carolina offensive line was supposed to block Commings.
Only one of the above actually happened.
Commings does not have to do a lot of work here outside of making sure he gets to the quarterback before he realizes what is happening. He does just that and lays the boom for one of the better hits on a quarterback in his collegiate career.
Interception vs. Alabama, 2012
4 of 7Here is another pretty basic play, at least from where we are sitting.
In a major matchup with Georgia in 2012, Commings came through for his team in a big way in the second quarter.
He pressed his man at the line of scrimmage and did an excellent job of pushing him nearly out of bounds to eliminate the back-shoulder throw. Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron reacted predictably, and Commings was there to take advantage.
This is but another instance of Commings flashing his high football I.Q., not to mention his great ball skills.
Major Hit vs. Florida
5 of 7A great corner prospect, not to mention one who could act as a safety, needs to have some quality run-stops to his highlight reel in order to be taken seriously.
Sanders Commings has just that here.
Commings laid a massive lick on Florida running back Jeff Demps in the above video, but it is his ability to read and diagnose a play and then weave his way through would-be-blockers that is most impressive.
Of course, laying a massive hit that inspires the team and fans is great too.
Interception vs. Tennessee, 2012
6 of 7In the above clip, Sanders Commings flashes two very important traits you want in a safety prospect—great awareness away from his assignment and the ball skills to change games.
Catching a pass in general can be a difficult task for a defensive back, so adjusting and making a play on a tipped ball is next to impossible.
Apparently not for Commings.
He keeps his eye on the ball at all times and uses his physical gifts to make the highlight play here against Tennessee.
Interception vs. Mississippi State, 2011
7 of 7Once more we have Sanders Commings expertly adapting to a deflected pass while it is in the air and making a play on the ball.
This time the victim is Mississippi State. Commings drops back into coverage but (as always) stays focused on the football.
The receiver in front of him has the pass bounce off his hands, and Commings has the awareness to pluck it out of the air and return it as far as possible before being dragged down by a member of the opposing offense.
