A Nadalian Task, Of Course
Many a time in history, a concept is born of a man. It starts with comparing another's feats with what that man has done, follows up with slowly weaning it away from him, and finally completely separating it from his personality. Even the man himself, even as the originator of it, loses that right eventually - the right to be seen in conjunction with his concept.
The flesh never is indestructible and its destruction comes in degrees and stages. With each degree the man suffers a decay of the mind as well, which to many, arises from the flesh. The mind that has to follow the spirit in ideality, slowly weans itself away from the spirit like the man's name is weaned away from his concept.
It is one thing to show courage, grit and determination in the face of adversity and an altogether different thing to take it into one's head that it is criminal or even suicidal to link these qualities with just periods of difficulty.
This is akin to believing that complacency is blasphemy.
That these qualities, going by the fact that they help us restore normalcy at times of adversity, would definitely help us to elevate the normal to the super-normal, would be a belief that would be as credible as any other, given that rationality is at a premium nowadays.
It is one thing to play the last point of your match with a sense of urgency, and an altogether different thing to play every point of the match as if your life depends on it. It is indeed bordering on the super-normal to believe that it is sacrilegious to show complacency even during change-overs.
That one is ready to run after every ball and put it back on court as if the ball is oneself, and the lines of the court are what divide the living from the dead, shows one's courage and one's strength of belief. Courage because one is not afraid to risk one's flesh, and integrity because this lack of fear arises from the mind steadfastedly following the spirit at all times.
There should not be any confusion here that the "courage" alluded to in the previous paragraph has to do with a fear of death, which would be an irony. It rather implies the courage of the mind to extend morality to every last nook and cranny of what one calls life. It is an attempt to celebrate life in every instant of it that one is aware of. It is the metaphorical equivalent of a Universe without Wormholes.
As far as predictions go, the man responsible for this particluar concept, which is to be christened in the following sentences, will not live up to his reputation beyond a certain short amount of time. People predict that the final divorce of the man from his concept will happen in less than half a decade.
But the present state of affairs in no way give any room for such beliefs. Insted we see a man who is attempting to further the borders of his concept.
Yes, it is indeed a Nadalian task to win the French Open when Rafael Nadal is playing. It is the Man himself, in complete harmony with his concept, that is the most formidable of opponents.
