NCAA Bracket 2013: Updating the Top Teams' Performances

Jeremy FuchsJun 2, 2018

For all the upsets in the NCAA Bracket 2013, the top teams are the ones who often end up winning it all.

This year will likely be no different. How are the top teams doing?

We update the top teams' performances and give you the rundown on what to expect from them going forward.

Louisville

Louisville is the No. 1 overall seed in the tournament, and they sure looked like it in their second-round matchup against North Carolina A&T. The Cardinals won by a convincing score of 79-48.

Russ Smith scored 23 points and had a remarkable eight steals.

The Aggies had no chance against Louisville's aggressive defense. It is that defense that could propel them to a championship.

Louisville was absolutely dominant, and they are proving why the selection committee made them the top team in the Big Dance. The Cardinals shot a healthy 57 percent from the field and looked like a title contender.

The Cardinals take on Colorado State in their third-round matchup.

Duke

After losing a 15-seed in last year's tournament, Duke did not let that same fate befall them this season, as they beat 15th-seeded Albany by a score of 73-61.

Seth Curry was terrific, scoring 26 points. Mason Plumlee did his part too, scoring 23.

It's easy to forget, but Duke does have big wins against Louisville, Ohio State and Miami.

Their victory against Albany showed just how good this Blue Devil team can be. They're a contender to win it all.

Gonzaga

It should've been a blowout. Instead, Gonzaga had to squeak by the 16th-seeded Southern Jaguars, narrowly avoiding what would've been one of the biggest upsets in college basketball history.

Gonzaga struggled against Southern's athleticism, and didn't pull away until the end of the game, which they won by a score of 64-58.

Kelly Olynyk was terrific for the Zags, scoring 21 points and grabbing 10 boards.

The fact that they struggled against a 16-seed should give Gonzaga fans serious concerns. After all, this is a team that many picked to win the title. Their next game against Wichita State will be telling—if they can dominate, all will be forgotten. If they struggle to win, then their candidacy for the title will fade away.
