WWE WrestleMania: Ranking Every Celebrity Match in the Supercard's History

Ryan DilbertJun 2, 2018

Boxers, actors and NFL players have wrestled in WrestleMania matches of both the engaging and atrocious kind.

Along with the classics fans will never forget, WrestleMania has also given us a share of matches involving celebrities. Some of these bouts have suffered from being placed too high on the card or having ill-advised stipulations. Others have surprised fans with their entertainment value.

Regardless of how one may feel about Snooki being on the same event as Undertaker, celebrities are clearly a continued part of WrestleMania. Some of them have worsened the WrestleManias they were a part of, while the best celebrity matches have added buzz to the show.

Ranked here based on how much they thrilled us, here are WrestleMania's best and worst celebrity matches.

8. WrestleMania XV: Butterbean vs. Bart Gunn

1 of 8

Bart Gunn's prize for winning the Brawl for All tournament was to get clocked by a professional boxer at WrestleMania.

The ill-advised tournament pitted pro wrestlers against each other in a legit fight environment. It's an idea that Jim Cornette described as, "the stupidest thing the WWF has ever done."

Instead of letting the idea die when Gunn knocked out Bradshaw in August 1998, WWE had Gunn face Butterbean at WrestleMania XV. The fight that ensued lasted less than a minute. Butterbean knocked him out in the first round.

The San Diego Chicken soon ran in, the stink of the Gunn/Butterbean fiasco still hanging in the air.

7. WrestleMania II: Roddy Piper vs. Mr. T

2 of 8

Roddy Piper and Mr. T continued their feud from the first WrestleMania, but this time without all that pesky wrestling.

Even if fans tuning into WrestleMania liked boxing, this match would have disappointed. Neither Mr. T nor Piper had much talent for the sweet science. Not surprisingly then, the action dragged.

Piper tried to make this as entertaining as he could by dancing like Muhammad Ali and flinging a stool at Mr. T. In the end, the fiery Piper lost his cool. He tossed down the referee, bodyslammed Mr. T and chaos followed.

WWE could have had them trim this down to two rounds. Nothing was accomplished here. Few were entertained.

Fans would have been far better served with Piper in a wrestling match.

6. WrestleMania XXVIII: Kelly Kelly and Maria Menounos vs. Beth Phoenix and Eve

3 of 8

TV host Maria Menounos exceeded expectations in her WrestleMania tag team match, but for most fans, those expectations were extremely low anyway.

Sandwiched between Big Show's Intercontinental Championship win and the battle between Triple H vs. Undertaker, this Divas match had a few cool spots, but ultimately only managed to make the Divas division look bad.

The biggest takeaway from this bout is that a non-wrestler working with legitimately cracked ribs pinned the Divas champ.

It's a forgettable match that did little to utilize Beth Phoenix or Eve Torres. Perhaps WWE only wanted a palate cleanser before fans took on the emotional weight of the Hell in a Cell match.

5. WrestleMania XXVII: Mixed Tag Match with Snooki

4 of 8

This tag match had a few nice spots and little story. It was a mixed bag overall.

John Morrison and Dolph Ziggler weren't involved nearly enough. Trish Stratus’ return was a welcome addition. Snooki surprised everyone by performing a fine-looking handspring elbow.

Following Triple H vs. Undertaker's great match is a tough task for anyone, so perhaps WWE just wanted to shove in some filler after it.

4. WrestleMania 2: 20-Man Battle Royal

5 of 8

NFL players including William "Refrigerator" Perry joined WWE stars like Bret Hart, Iron Sheik, Bruno Sammartino and Andre the Giant in a solid 20-man battle royal.

The Hart Foundation double-teamed Andre. Perry eliminated Big John Studd in an amusing spot where he offered to shake Studd's hands and then pulled him out of the ring.

The format allowed the wrestlers to do much of the work while The Fridge shined. Andre eventually won, but the Chicago crowd was nuts for Perry.

3. WrestleMania XI: Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Lawrence Taylor

6 of 8

It certainly wasn't Brock Lesnar vs. Eddie Guerrero, but Bam Bam Bigelow and Lawrence Taylor played up the underdog angle well.

Had this not been booked as a main event, fans may look back on it a bit more fondly.

Taylor's performance was admirable considering his lack of experience. The action was far too slow for the most part, though, but it still managed to create some palpable tension.

Were this a match on Raw or an opening bout on a lesser pay-per-view, Taylor would be applauded for his efforts rather than this being remembered as an unfitting way to end a WrestleMania.

2. WrestleMania XXIV: Floyd Mayweather vs. Big Show

7 of 8

The battle of 5'8'' Floyd Mayweather against the 7'0'' Big Show was a surprisingly effective David vs. Goliath match.

The contrast of size was intriguing and Mayweather's swagger brought an infusion of energy to the bout.

Mayweather managed his improbable win in the most realistic way WWE could have constructed. He needed a steel chair and a ton of help from his entourage to gain the upper hand over the giant.

The two men told a compelling story and maximized the potential of this odd-couple match.

1. WrestleMania I: Hulk Hogan and Mr. T vs. Roddy Piper and Paul Orndorff

8 of 8

This is how to harness the power of a celebrity while delivering an exciting match.

The former bodyguard and TV tough guy, Mr. T, came off as a credible tough guy. The wrestlers carried the match. Mr. T only came in for short bursts.

There was a powerful buzz from start to finish.

It didn't feel like a match thrown together for some cheap publicity. The fact that Mr. T was woven so well into the storyline made him seem like a necessity to this story of heroes squashing the arrogant heels.

Fans were frenzied to see Roddy Piper and Paul Orndorff get their comeuppance. A fun, chaotic energy powered this match past its in-ring flaws, making it the standard for celebrity matches.
