Barcelona vs. AC Milan: Live Stream, Start Time, TV Schedule and More

Dan TalintyreMay 31, 2018

AC Milan will look to do what seemed unthinkable a month back when they play Barcelona this weekend—keep their Champions League season alive.

The Spanish league leaders were heavily favorites to dominate their opponents throughout the round of 16 tie, but with a shock 2-0 loss in the opening leg at the San Siro are in grave danger of being eliminated entirely from the tournament by the Rossoneri.

The Catalan club will walk out at Camp Nou this week needing to chase down the two-goal margin that Milan currently has, which we know Barca are more than capable of given their depth in attack. However, with Milan's defense holding firm in the first leg, they certainly won't have it easy here.

The Italian powerhouse are proving to be a very tough side to break down in this year's competition and will no doubt pose a stern test to Barcelona again in this one. Whether they can hang on, though, and book their spot in the Champions League quarterfinals still remains to be seen.

Three Questions to Ponder

1. Can Barcelona find the way through Milan's defense?

It seems like the obvious question to ask, but the answer will be the defining one in this game and to the team that progresses to the quarterfinals.

Milan were dominant defensively in the opening leg, and while Barca weren't great either they were still beaten by the better team on the night. However, needing to score goals here at home, expect Barcelona to be a lot more direct and forthcoming with their attacking raids and really threaten the Rossoneri throughout this one.

2. How will Barcelona line up in attack?

In order to achieve that attacking presence and much-needed goals, Barcelona must get their attacking formation right here. Unlike the first leg when Cesc Fabregas was taken off for Alexis Sanchez, Barca must be getting everything out of their players and find a way through Milan's defense.

Will Jordi Roura opt for Pedro on the right? Or Christian Tello? What role will Xavi play to escape the man-marking of Sulley Muntari? How Barca function and line up in attack will no doubt be key to their chances at winning this football game.

3. How will Milan use their counterattack?

Milan devastated Barcelona in the first leg by getting at them on the counterattack, and it completely changed the complexion of this tie. Expect them, then, to be looking to counter again in the second leg and try to exploit the Blaugrana at the back.

If Milan can nab a goal, Barca would need to score four goals to progress, and against a compact defense that simply doesn't seem like happening. However, with Giampaolo Pazzini missing for the visitors, Stephan El Shaarawy will be forced to carry much of their attack here.

How that will affect their offensive production will be interesting to see.

Prediction

As strong as Barcelona are and as devastating as they'll likely be in attack, the onus in this one (for me) still rests with how Milan approach the game.

They beat the Spanish giants fair and square in the opening leg, and dominated defensively to get there. If they stay strong at the back again and impose themsleves in central midfield like the opening leg, it's hard to see Barca getting too much going.

Especially given the threat Milan pose on the counterattack.

Barcelona will likely have to push from the back to score the two goals and could leave themselves exposed at the back as a result. El Shaarawy is a deadly finisher who doesn't need too many opportunities to leave his mark—something he'll no doubt do in this one.

I would say that Barcelona bridge back the two-goal deficit before El Shaarawy strikes on the counterattack. That will leave Barca needing two goals to win, and while they'll pick up one of them, they won't be able to secure the third and their spot in the final eight as a result.

AC Milan through to the Champions League quarterfinals in style.

Final score: Barcelona 3, AC Milan 1

(AC Milan win 3-3 on aggregate, away-goal rule)
