Player to Watch: Wayne Rooney (Manchester United)
Star striker turned attacking midfielder Wayne Rooney was fairly quiet in the first leg against Real Madrid, but will likely have much more impact in this second leg at Old Trafford. United will be far more open to attacking Los Blancos' defense, which will mean much more involvement for Rooney—which can only mean good things for the England international.
Rooney has a brilliant ability to drop back and spark attacking raids when given the opportunity, and he'll likely do the same again in this one. He'll try to operate in the channels between the midfield and defensive lines, and if he can find that space he will be a real handful in this one.
His floating style throughout attack as well as clinical finishing ability make him a real handful to try and pick up going forward in attack, as his recent performance against Norwich City (two assists, one goal, man of the match in 4-0 win) will attest to.
Look for Rooney to be the key factor in United's attack in this one as he tries to get between Xabi Alonso in defensive midfield and Madrid's defensive line.
Prediction
Despite playing away from home at Manchester United's home ground, Real Madrid will certainly fancy their chances at being able to get a result here.
The reigning Spanish champions just pulled off back-to-back wins over world football powerhouse Barcelona—one of which came in the Nou Camp. Thus Madrid will know that if they can win in Catalonia over Barcelona, they can certainly win at Old Trafford over the Red Devils.
United will be much more inclined to attack in this second leg, which should see plenty of goals scored in it as a result and make for a more free-flowing game.
Whether that will suit the home side or Madrid more is still yet to be seen, as both possess the counterattacking ability to truly threaten here.
In the end, the big question for United will be how their defense will cope with the attacking threats of Cristiano Ronaldo and many others. They were bombarded in the first leg by Los Blancos, and despite only conceding three goals in their past nine league matches will likely still face much of the same again in this one from the Spanish champions.
Phil Jones' absence could mean that Ronaldo has even more space and time to operate and contribute to Madrid's attack. And given the success that the superstar winger has had in 2013, that doesn't bode well for United's chances of winning this one.
I expect plenty of goals here for both teams, but with Madrid's attack to simply prove too strong on the night and carrying them through by the slightest of margins.
Prediction: Manchester United 2, Real Madrid 2
(Real Madrid win 3-3 on aggregate, away-goal rule)
