Red Wings Sign Johan Franzen Through 2020

The Detroit Red Wings have done a fine job retaining the talent that helped them win the Stanley Cup last season and today took another step to lock up their future talents for the remainder of their careers. Detroit has signed sniper Johan Franzen to an 11-year contract, at the end of which Franzen will be 40 years old.

The flashy shooter has 34 goals in 69 games this season while averaging just over 18 minutes of ice time. He scored 13 goals in 16 Playoff games in 2008 en route to Detroit’s Stanley Cup championship run.

He joins Henrik Zetterberg (12 years, $73 million) as Red Wings who have signed long-term contracts.

Marian Hossa, who could be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season, is likely the next target with whom the Red Wings would like to negotiate an extension.
