The Three Horseman: Heisman Talk
With college football season less than four months away, it might be time to start considering some players for preseason awards.
And what better award to begin with then the Heisman?
Who should win the the Heisman is often a topic of heated discussion towards the end of college football season.
Often times it boils down to two questions:
Are you voting for the player who is most meaningful to his team? Or are you voting for the best player in college football?
Last years candidates are prime examples. Statistically, this is how it panned out among the three Heisman finalists:
Sam Bradford
Completed 328 out of 483 passes for 4720 yards giving him a 68 percent completion percentage to go along with 50 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Bradford also had four rushing touchdowns.
Colt McCoy
Completed 332 out of 433 passes for 3859 yards, giving him a 77 percent completion percentage to go along with 34 touchdowns and eight interceptions. McCoy also lead his team in rushing yards and scored 10 rushing touchdowns.
Tim Tebow
Completed 192 passes out of 298 passes for 2746 yards, giving him a 64 percent completion percentage to go along with 30 touchdowns and four interceptions. Tebow also had 12 rushing touchdowns.
Looking at these statistics, it is easy to see that voters voted for the player with the best statistics. Meanwhile the player that was most vital to his team's success was McCoy, and the player that was the most successful was Tebow, since he won the national title.
So that begs the questions this year: Which player will put up the best numbers? Which player will be most vital to his team's success? Finally, which player will be the most successful?
The Most Productive Player goes to Colt McCoy, I'm predicting Colt will have a outstanding year as he is returning all his receivers with the exception of Quan Cosby. Colt will throw for over 4,000 yards, 40 touchdowns, and only have five interceptions as well as having 15 rushing touchdowns.
The Player Most Vital to the Team's success goes to Tim Tebow. This guy has proved time and time again that he is a force to be reckoned with, when it comes time for any big game, Tebow fits the Florida spread offense perfectly and will have a year that is somewhat in-between his sophomore and junior campaigns. Look for him to throw for 2,500 25 touchdowns and rush for 15 more.
The player who will be the most successful is Tim Tebow, Look for Tebow to take home a third national title in his four year career. He's that good.
But the Heisman winner will be Colt McCoy. With the season McCoy will have, the voters won't be able to deny him the Heisman two years in a row.
One Heisman dark horse is Dez Bryant. This guy had a breakout season last year, and for a wide receiver he has shown himself to be one of the best individual athletes in college football.
Last year Bryant had 81 receptions for 1,480 yards and 19 touchdowns. Look for him to have a similar season this year, but his ability to win the Heisman will hinge on how successful his Oklahoma State Cowboys are.
I really went out on a limb on some of these preseason predictions. Later on in the season, we will find out how accurate I was.
