Is CC Sabathia's First Game a Sign Of Things to Come?

Steve ChottApr 7, 2009

New Yankees starting pitcher CC Sabathia was chosen to start both the season opener and the home opener at the new billion dollar Yankee Stadium.

Yesterday on Opening Day Sabathia was slated to pitch against AL East foes the Baltimore Orioles. Sabathia only lasted 4.1 innings giving up 8 hits, 6 ER, 5 walks, and no strikeouts in the Yankees 10-5 loss to the Orioles.

This is the first time a Yankees pitcher has not struck out a single batter on opening day.

But was Sabathia's first start caused by nerves or is this a sign of things to come?

Last year Sabathia went 17-10 with a 2.70 ERA and 251 strikeouts.

But CC's season didn't start off well. In his first three games last season Sabathia went 0-3 giving up 22 runs, had a 10.88 ERA, and was not looking good. But then he finished 6-8 with the Indians before being dealt to the Milwaukee Brewers where he would dazzle everyone and pick up Cy Young nominations even though he was only in the National League half a season.

And as we all know CC decided not to sign with the Brewers when he became a free agent, instead signing with the New York Yankees.

And that all set it up for CC's throttling of himself on Opening day.

As we all know Yankees fans will go ahead and boo CC if he does badly, but as the season goes on, will CC be able to pick it up and win 15 or more games?

It is too early to tell but I do have faith in the big man. Nerves definitely got to him as many people expect him to carry the Yankees this season. We will have to see if CC can do that and only time can tell.

It is too early to call CC's time with the Yankees a bust or say that he is overpaid. Because their are still many more games ahead for CC and the Yankees.
