NBA MVP Breakdown

Joe WillettMar 27, 2008

There have been plenty of articles on this website of people putting out their opinions of who they think should be the NBA MVP.

I decided that I would try to get all of those opinions in one place.

So, without further ado, what are the specifics on your two MVP candidates?

TOP NEWS

DENVER NUGGETS VS GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS, NBA

Kobe Bryant, SG, Lakers (49-23)

Stat Line

28.3 ppg, 2.9 spg, 5.3 apg, 6.2 rpg

Behind the Numbers

Kobe Bryant leads a Lakers team that has spent the last few seasons in turmoil after Shaq's departure to the Heat.

He has had multiple problems in his personal life (most notably the rape case), and has been unable to create a top tier team.

This season, all of those things changed.

He has lead the Lakers into a musical chairs game with basically the top five Western Conference teams for the top spot.

Before Pau Gasol, they were a good team being held together by possibly the best player in the game, after Gasol, they are championship material.

But the reason that they are championship caliber, because of Mr. Kobe Bryant.

LeBron James, SF, Cavaliers (40-32)

Stat Line

30.7 ppg, 1.8 spg, 7.3 apg, 8.1 rpg

Behind the Numbers

LeBron James leads a team that has never gone far in the playoffs.  Sceptics say that he can't lead a team to the promise land the way Kobe and Jordan have.

But the MVP isn't about post-season accomplishments, it's about how you dominate the regular season.

LeBron has done just that.

He has the possibly the most dominant inside shot in the game.  He can run down the lane and, to this point, nobody has been able to stop him.

He also finds a way to make a team of average and mediocre players win at a very nice rate.

He seems to have found a way to score every time he wants to, mix that with an decent jump shot, and do you have the the MVP?

Well, that's it for this article, leave your...wait...what's that...off in the distance?

It's...

Chris Paul, PG, Hornets (49-21)

Stat Line

21.6 ppg, 2.7 spg, 11.4 apg, 3.9 rpg

Behind the Numbers

A lot of people believe that the MVP should go to the best player on the best team.

Of all the candidates mentioned, Chris Paul fits that description to the best.

He leads the shocking New Orleans Hornets that just two years ago were unsure where they were going to play their games.

He also fits the description of a player that makes everybody around him better.

David West and Tyson Chandler were only average players before they were put into Paul's presence.  Now both of those players are All-Star caliber, because of the way Paul spreads the ball around.

In last nights showdown between Paul's Hornets and Lebron's Cavaliers, Paul drove to the lane to draw coverage before passing it back to a wide open David West who hit the game-winning shot with little time left.

He gets the ball to the open person better than anybody in the NBA (that's right, better than Steve Nash) and is completely in the MVP race.

Seriously, this time the article is over.

Leave your comments as to who you think the MVP should be.

I'm Joe W.
