WWE Hell in a Cell 2012: Highlighting Competitor's Win-Loss Records

Chris FeatherstoneJun 2, 2018

2012 brought two pinnacle moments for the Hell in a Cell match—15 years and 25 matches.

It all started in October 1997 in a match that pitted Shawn Michaels against the Undertaker. After months of threats from his former manager Paul Bearer, the Undertaker was shocked to see his "brother" Kane appear.

After a tombstone to the Undertaker by Kane, a bloodied and battered Michaels escaped with a victory.

15 years later, the Undertaker was privileged to be involved in the Hell in a Cell match at WrestleMania 28 against the man with the same number of HIAC match victories—Triple H. Michaels was also involved in the match as the special referee.

Because of the rich tradition of the match, WWE decided to make it a stand-alone PPV in 2009.

Out of the 15 superstars competing this year, 10 of them have been previously involved in a match at the PPV.

Here are their win-loss records.

The Miz

1 of 10

Record: 0-2

2009 loss vs. Kofi Kingston, Jack Swagger

2010 loss vs. Daniel Bryan, John Morrison

Interestingly enough, both of The Miz' HIAC matches involved the U.S. title, and he has yet to win at the PPV. Kofi Kingston pinned him in 2009, and Miz will be seeking retribution at this year's PPV.

CM Punk

2 of 10

Record: 0-2

2009 loss vs. Undertaker

2011 loss vs. Alberto del Rio, John Cena

Both CM Punk's HIAC appearances involved a world title. He came in the 2009 PPV as World Heavyweight Champion. At the 2011 PPV, he was trying to recapture his WWE Championship that Alberto del Rio won at SummerSlam and lost to John Cena a month later.

He has yet to win at the PPV, and Ryback wishes for that streak to continue.

Cody Rhodes

3 of 10

Record: 1-1

2009 loss w/Ted DiBiase vs. DX

2011 win vs. John Morrison

This will be Cody Rhodes' second tag team match at the HIAC PPV. The first one was a bit higher caliber (the actual main event), but he has a chance to win his fifth tag team title with his fourth partner this Sunday.

Sheamus

4 of 10

Record: 1-1

2010 loss vs. Randy Orton

2011 win vs. Christian

This will be Sheamus' second HIAC match involving a world title. The first one against Randy Orton didn't go as planned, and he is looking to gain a victory against the Big Show this Sunday.

Randy Orton

5 of 10

Record: 2-1

2009 win vs. John Cena

2010 win vs. Sheamus

2011 loss vs. Mark Henry

Randy Orton is the only former world champion who has competed in all three HIAC pay-per-views. He continues this streak by competing in his fourth one this year. His most memorable HIAC moment was capturing the WWE Championship from John Cena in 2009, portraying his consummate heel "Viper" gimmick.

Alberto Del Rio

6 of 10

Record: 1-0

2011 win vs. CM Punk, John Cena

Alberto del Rio has a chance to win his second consecutive match at HIAC. However, Randy Orton is determined to end the streak at one victory. The build for this match has actually been one of the best builds for the PPV, and the match should have been booked inside the cell.

Daniel Bryan

7 of 10

Record: 1-0

2010 win vs. John Morrison, Miz

This year's HIAC pay-per-view will be No. 2 for Daniel Bryan. His previous match was a Triple Threat submissions count anywhere victory against the Miz and John Morrison to retain his U.S. title.

Bryan will also defend a title come Sunday, teaming with fellow tag team champion Kane against Cody Rhodes and Damien Sandow, better known as Rhodes Scholars.

Kane

8 of 10

Record: 1-0

2010 win vs. Undertaker

2010 was one of the best years for Kane. After winning the Money in the Bank match, Kane cashed it in the same night, defeating Rey Mysterio for the World Heavyweight Championship. He was a part of one of the biggest angles of 2010, wondering who was the culprit in putting the Undertaker in a "vegetative state."

We later found out that Kane was actually the mastermind behind it all to finally come out of the shadow of the Undertaker.

Surprisingly, Kane defeated Undertaker in their first and only HIAC match—13 years after both being involved in the first one.

Big Show

9 of 10

Record: 1-0

2009 win w/Chris Jericho vs. Rey Mysterio/Batista

The Big Show is competing in his first HIAC pay-per-view since it's inception in 2009. Then, he had a different look, teaming with fellow "JeriShow" teammate Chris Jericho and retaining the Unified Tag Team Championship against Rey Mysterio and Batista.

This year, Big Show has an opportunity to become 2-0 by winning the World Heavyweight Championship against Sheamus.

Kofi Kingston

10 of 10

Record: 2-0

2009 win vs. Miz, Jack Swagger

2011 win w/Evan Bourne vs. Dolph Ziggler/Jack Swagger

This year's event will mark the third HIAC pay-per-view in which Kofi Kingston has competed. All three have involved a title.

He is the only WWE superstar who is undefeated at PPV and has competed in two or more.

This Sunday, he looks to continue this streak by defeating the Miz to retain the Intercontinental title.
