Power Ranking the Greatest Hell in a Cell Moments of All Time
As we approach Sunday’s Hell in a Cell pay-per-view, it’s time to look back on WWE’s most demonic structure and find the best moments in the history of the stipulation.
There have been dozens of legendary matches inside the Hell in a Cell structure since the match’s inception, but the moments that have lived on through time have been the wildest spots and biggest debuts in wrestling history.
If you were too young to remember, or just love reminiscing about the good old days, we have a slideshow full of nostalgia pops just for you.
These are the best moments in Hell in a Cell history!
No. 5: Undertaker Makes Rikishi Famous
1 of 5While many wrestling fans disliked Rikishi as a top star, there is no questioning the guts it took to let Undertaker throw him off the Hell in a Cell structure at Armageddon 2000.
It was during the match between Kurt Angle, Rikishi, Triple H, Undertaker, The Rock and Stone Cold that Undertaker and Rikishi found themselves on the top of the cell.
With a truck full of leaves on the ground, Rikishi’s fall was much more pleasant than most, and thus can only reach No. 5 on this list. Good job, good effort nonetheless, Rikishi.
No. 4: HBK’s Big Bump
2 of 5While Shawn Michaels and Undertaker are two of the greatest wrestlers to ever lace up a pair of wrestling boots, the duo’s finest moment together came in the first ever Hell in a Cell match at Badd Blood 1997.
The feud was billed as one of the fiercest in WWF history, and the subsequent Hell in a Cell match and the brutality that came with it proved that the billing was accurate. Adding in the fact that HBK took the spill from cage through the announce table, and this was one of the best matches of all time.
The bump itself became less impressive as the years went on, but the template that Michaels and Undertaker used to craft that match is still practiced today every time the Hell in a Cell structure is in play.
No. 3: Kane’s Debut
3 of 5There have been hundreds of anticipated debuts in wrestling history, but the best of them all came when Kane first appeared at Badd Blood 1997 in the same match HBK took his bump.
As great as HBK versus Undertaker’s match was, it was Kane that stole the show that night.
The WWE Universe has been spoiled over the years with great storylines and appearances, but there will never again be a moment of intrigue like there was the night Undertaker’s little brother showed up and ripped the door of the Hell in a Cell structure.
That’s gotta be Kane!
No. 2: Mick Foley Goes Through the Cell
4 of 5While the debate will always rage over whether this spot was planned or if the cage really did give out, there is no doubt that when Undertaker put Mankind through the top of the Hell in a Cell stricture, Foley was physically destroyed.
With his tooth coming thorough his lip and enough physical damage to put down 10 men, when Foley fell through the roof at King of the Ring 1998, the entire WWE Universe was stunned.
As you watch the video of this incident, please note that not only did Foley take the huge fall to the canvas below, but also that the chair that Undertaker had been holding also smashes Foley’s face as crashes to the ground.
No. 1: Mick Foley Gets Tossed off the Cell
5 of 5The single greatest moment in Hell in a Cell history is the one most fans think of when they see the demonic structure: the moment when Undertaker threw Mankind off the cell at King of the Ring 1998.
Foley and Undertaker were fighting on the roof of the cell when the fans started to realize how close they were coming to the edge. While most in the WWE Universe didn’t believe that anyone would fall off—or even better, be thrown off—the Hell in a Cell’s roof, Mick Foley was a man of the people.
In what has been argued as the biggest bump in all of mainstream professional wrestling history, the combination of the situation itself, the classic call by Jim Ross and Mankind’s unwillingness to stay on the stretcher afterwards make this the No. 1 moment by far.
