UFC Fighter B.J. Penn's Downfall

Nate LawsonMar 12, 2009

My most recent article, about B.J. Penn filing a document with the Nevada State Athletic Commission, caused quite a stir. It was a controversial topic, and I have decided to follow it with another one.

This is related to Mr. Penn once again. Surprise, surprise.

I have noticed that the majority of people are really upset with B.J. right now. A lot of people are adding him to their "most hated" lists.

Think I'll use a little bit of foresight and make a projection.

Obviously, B.J. Penn needs to really perform in the Octagon, so that people can forget about this whole "complaint" mess he finds himself in at this moment in time. But he's not just fighting to earn back respect.

What Penn fans have to be concerned about right now is the breakdown B.J. is going through. He's clearly not in his right mind. I do not remember the last time a fighter broke down this bad after a fight, and I mean he is breaking down.

Even though I am not much of a fan of the man, I am a fan of his fighting. Come on, he is great. He may not be great in welterweight division, but in lightweight, well, he is fantastic.

While I may not be his secret admirer, my respect for him in the Octagon is what really has me worried. He is basically free-falling in the public eye right now. This makes his next fight, whoever it's against and whenever it's scheduled for, very, very crucial.

This statement may be somewhat bold. Actually, it is really bold to be honest with you.

I believe B.J. Penn can't lose his next fight in the Octagon. The repercussions of a loss would be the end of his career. If a loss to Georges St. Pierre, the hardest opponent he has ever faced, affected him this badly, just think what a loss to Kenny Florian would do to him.

The loss of his lightweight belt, I believe, could really ruin his career.

I would not be nearly as concerned had he taken his loss to St. Pierre with grace and filed this complaint without so much ill will towards his opponent.

However, the way he is taking this loss is insane. He may be one loss away from the biggest meltdown in UFC history.

His next fight is key. If he wins, then all of this is irrelevant. If he loses, then I believe something no one wants to see will come to pass.
