The Strangest Sideshows and Most Unbelieveable Events in MMA History
This past week, word broke that former WEC fighter Chance Farrar was organizing a two-on-two mixed martial arts fight for an Oct. 20 Desert Rage Full Contact Fighting event.
The bout, which is set to take place in Yuma, Ariz., is just the latest crazy idea to come out of the MMA community.
Not surprisingly, the sport has a long history of strange and sometimes entertaining derivatives that I can't believe actually exist.
Here are some of the strangest and most interesting stories and sideshows in MMA history.
ShockFights
1 of 7ShockFights may be one of the most brutal and insane ideas to come out of the MMA community.
Fighters' gloves are equipped with stun guns that add a literal shock to their punches.
I don't know much about ShockFights, but I can't say that I see them sticking around for long.
Tag Team MMA
2 of 7Tag team MMA was the first time fans were introduced to a two-on-two formatted cage fight, the precursor to Farrar's upcoming concoction.
Taking a page from professional wrestling, teams of two would square off one-on-one with the ability to switch out with a slap of the hands.
Compared to some of the others on the list, tag team MMA seems pretty tame.
Fight Church
3 of 7Thanking God after a fight is one thing, but the stars of the documentary Fight Church take it to a whole new level.
The film, which is still in production, draws an odd link between MMA and Evangelical Christianity, even going so far as to call Jesus a fighter.
It will be interesting to see the full story when the documentary is released.
XARM
4 of 7XARM, the brain child of UFC architect Art Davie, features two combatants chained to a table as they duke it out wearing MMA gloves in an extreme case of arm-wrestling.
One of the more hilarious anomalies to come of the sport's community, the promotion is somehow still going strong, with its next event to take place later this month.
2-on-2 MMA
5 of 7This gladiator-style matchup pits teams of two against each other for some all-out mayhem inside the cage.
While the Unified Rules of MMA are still in effect for this bout, there will be a ton of notable additions. Despite not allowing elbows or knees, some strange new rules include weight classes determined by a team's total weight, unlimited five-minute rounds with one-minute breaks as well as the use of two referees.
I can't say that I'm not interested in seeing how this all plays out.
Midget MMA
6 of 7Who doesn't love some midget MMA action?
Sando
7 of 7But my personal favorite: Sando.
This three-man free-for-all just reeks of Bloodsport—or any other 80's-style martial arts flick.
I wonder what Jean-Claude Van Damme thinks about the insanity that is Sando.
