John Cena: Why WWE's Top Superstar Is His Own Worst Enemy

Mike ChiariJun 7, 2018

John Cena has essentially been the face of the WWE for the past seven years, and while he has legions upon legions of fans, he has his fair share of detractors as well.

Although I respect what Cena has accomplished, I fall into the latter category and, in a lot of ways, I believe he has been his own worst enemy.

The past two weeks have been a microcosm of why so many people have grown tired of Cena's act.

I realize that he is limited in what he can do based on the fact that he is still recovering from surgery to remove bone spurs in his elbow, but his promos and actions have made it quite clear that it's time for a change.

He took a week off a few weeks back, but returned to RAW last week.

Cena proceeded to cut one of the most agonizing promos I have ever seen as he talked about the size of Antonio Cesaro's nipples and how he would like to take RAW general manager A.J. Lee out on a date. It added absolutely nothing to the topic he should have been worried about, that being his pursuit of the WWE Championship.

If that wasn't bad enough, the Super Cena routine reared its ugly head as Cena managed to get the best of CM Punk later in the night by throwing him back in the ring with an angry Ryback waiting, despite the fact that Cena only had one usable arm. Just two weeks before, he beat up Punk with a lead pipe, even though he had one arm in a sling.

Many fans are simply tired of his juvenile ways and the fact that he overcomes the odds time and time again, while never really getting what he has coming to him.

I understand that he hasn't been WWE Champion in over a year, but he has still headlined almost every pay-per-view and won almost every match.

It isn't as if he has fallen on hard times.

Cena then became a walking contradiction this week as he opted out of the WWE Championship match at Hell in a Cell. He has been asking for a rematch for weeks and told Vince McMahon on RAW that he wanted to be in the match, but he bowed out during the contract signing in favor of Ryback.

I have to believe that the only reason he isn't going to be in the match is because his elbow hasn't fully healed yet, but the way it happened was idiotic.

I want to see Cena's character altered as much as the next guy, but having the guy who never backs down from a challenge suddenly step aside in favor of Ryback makes absolutely no sense.

Simply having Cena say that he wasn't cleared by the doctors would have been much more effective, but his character was jumbled even more instead. It almost seems like neither the creative team nor Cena knows what to do now that he can't wrestle and I'm sure it hasn't helped the fans' perception of Cena in the least.

Since getting injured, Cena's character has almost been schizophrenic.  He has gone from being jovial to irrationally angry and everything in between.

The way he's acting now actually makes me yearn for the usual Cena, but that isn't exactly a ringing endorsement. I'm not sure how much Cena's character is his own and how much is dictated by the writers, but I'm sure he has a ton of input.

Cena is going to be the top guy as long as he wants to be because of his massive fanbase, but if he continues on his current path, then the naysayers are only going to get louder.

I'm not saying that Cena needs to turn heel in order to freshen up his character, but he certainly needs to change something.

Ryback hasn't surpassed Cena in terms of actual popularity, but his crowd reactions have been better than Cena's.

I believe that has a lot to do with the fans being tired of Cena's act.

The longer Cena keeps the status quo, the more the fans will start to support guys like Ryback, and I'm sure that's something he wants to avoid.
