Clint Dempsey, Tottenham Hotspur Have Historic Day at Manchester United (Video)
Saturday was a good day to be Clint Dempsey.
It was an even better day for Tottenham Hotspur.
Dempsey scored his first goal for Spurs on Saturday, turning home his club's third goal—and what turned out to be the winner—in Tottenham's 3-2 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford.

With the goal, Dempsey became only the second American to score at Old Trafford. (Brian McBride, a former teammate of Dempsey's at Fulham, was the first). And if that wasn't enough history, the win was Tottenham's first at United's home ground since Oct. 25, 1989.
For the sake of historical reference, in October 1989 Dempsey was six years old, the Premier League did not yet exist and the first George Bush occupied the White House.
With such historical stakes, Saturday's match was suitably thrilling.
Tottenham took a 2-0 lead into halftime after an early goal by defender Jan Vertonghen and midfielder Gareth Bale's powerful run and shot in the 32nd minute.
After halftime, the match went nuts.
Nani pulled one back for United in the 51st minute, but Dempsey hit right back for Spurs only moments later, converting coolly on the rebound after Bale's shot from the left. Shinji Kagawa then grabbed United's second only one more minute later, and the match seemed destined for a high-scoring shootout.
But the score remained the same, which meant Spurs moved up to fifth and Dempsey had his winner against England's most famous side.
All in all, not a bad day at the office for Spurs, and quite the debut goal for the Deuce.
This could be the start of something memorable.
