T.O. Will Have Desperate Coaches in a Limbo

A.J. DeMelloMar 5, 2009

Ladies and Gentlemen, Terrell Owens is an Unrestricted Free Agent.

Every team in the National Football League should be calling this physical specimen, right?

Umm, guess again.

Owens, or "TO," might not just be the most hated athlete in sports, but the most overlooked free agent acquisition ever.

Teams will shy away due to his me-first mentality, since he has called out just about all of his former quarterbacks (Jeff Garcia, Donovan McNabb) on separate occasions.

Although he may have shed tears for Tony Romo, Owens dished out accusations to his former quarterback Garcia, saying he was "Gay," and blamed McNabb for the Super Bowl loss in 2005 saying he was too tired.

Clearly, this man is a bit selfish. Rumor has it he started even more rumblings last year in the Dallas locker room as he thought Romo was trying not to throw to him, but more to Jason Witten.

Owens will cost the the Dallas Cowboys roughly $9 million against the salary cap, but it was a wise decision to make for them to progress as a team and a reason to no longer point the finger at him when they lose.

Even at his age (35), Owens remains one of the top five receivers in the league and will help any offense instantly.

In the past three years with Dallas, he has the most touchdowns (38) amongst active NFL receivers to go with 235 receptions for in 3,587 yards.

The only problem is: when you decide to add TO to your team, you get TO the drama queen along with TO the player.

Could it not only be that he has a bad attitude at times, but hands to go along with it? Thirty-three drops last year he had, and some were in critical situations. Sean Payton made a note to point that out when discussing the option of Owens becoming a Saint.

What teams won't take a chance?

Cross out the Cowboys (Duh), Eagles, Dolphins, Patriots, Giants, Falcons, Saints, Bills, Broncos, Ravens, Packers, Seahawks, Bengals, Chargers, Panthers, Steelers, Cardinals, Vikings and Colts. All of those teams need TO drama like they need a new Head Coach.

Well, a couple of teams might be better off with a new coach, but let's get on with the main point of this article...

All of the teams listed above have:

A) A Head Coach that won't tolerate TO

B) A set Wide Receiver core/Offensive Nucleus

C) Already have dealt with TO and will pass without hesitating

All other teams not listed there is somewhat of a chance.

Which NFL teams possibly will take a chance?

Immediately, four teams come to mind.

Two of these teams have head coaches that are on the hot seat (Del Rio and Smith), and need to have winning records at the end of the year if they want to keep their jobs.

Some may think Cleveland will not be in the mix due to having Braylon Edwards, but don't be so sure.

Owens would bring some excitement to the Dawg Pound, and could erase Mangini's shaky start if the Browns do well with TO on board. It would also help Mangini decide on a starting quarterback, but it might not help Brady Quinn in maturation.

TO could rattle the cage in Cleveland in a good way, and Mangini might give him a good amount of breathing room to do so. However, TO could instantly destroy a locker room and possibly a young quarterback's confidence, but Brady Quinn seems like a tough cat.

Due to Mangini known for being a disciplinarian, most likely he passes here.

The Jaguars need desperate help at the receiver position, and may take a risk with Owens. Del Rio may have signed a new five-year contract extension prior to the 2008 season, but the season was not so good.

Jacksonville gambled with inconsistent receiver Jerry Porter, who has problems of his own (asking Raider fans for apologies, flipping the bird to them, the feud with Art Shell and his asking trading price of three first-round picks...), and
