Always Bet Against Oscar De La Hoya in Super Mega Fights Theory
King JMar 5, 2009
Ask any of my fellow boxing friends and they can all tell you that I am a big fan of Oscar De La Hoya the business man, but not the fighter. Look folks first off let's face it Oscar is a good business man, no actually he is a great business man and that is all that he pretty much is these days and has been for a number of years.
Was I ever a fan of Oscar De La Hoya the fighter? Yes I was, a huge fan actually. Oscar's resume is simply amazing. He got to be the biggest draw in the sport by always fighting the best and his resume reflects that.
Whitaker, Camacho, Chavez, Trinidad, Mosley, Hopkins, Mayweather, Pacquiao, all pound for pound champions that highlight Oscar's remarkable resume. It could be even argued that Oscar never ducked anyone through out his whole career.
So when did I stop being a fan of Oscar De La Hoya the fighter you ask? It was the night that Oscar made it clear that he was no longer the Golden Boy of boxing but the Golden Boy of business. This was September 18th, 1999 the night he fought Tito Trinidad.
After dominating and taking Tito to school with ease for the first half of the fight, Oscar began to shock the world and not in a good way by running backwards for the second half of the fight and ultimately literally giving the fight away to Trinidad.
I could not make sense of it. Why would Oscar give up his undefeated record in the biggest fight of his life when he was clearly winning with ease?

After the fight the HBO cameras followed Oscar into the locker room which was rather odd for that was not a common practice of HBO but they did and it captured all the facial reactions of Oscar as he walked into his locker room and he was trying his best to show his frustration and anger to the decision going to Trinidad but at the same time he was almost smiling and could not help but have a smirk on his face the whole time.
That smirk told me that this was the official exiting of Oscar De La Hoya the fighter and the official entering of Oscar De La Hoya the business man.

As a former fan of Oscar the fighter I was crushed, but I could only use it to my advantage and so I did. Figuring out that Oscar would lose in all his super mega fights from this point on I would always put money on who ever Oscar was fighting as long as it was a super mega fight. This was my: "Always Bet Against Oscar In Super Mega Fights Theory."
So the next super mega fight came Shane Mosley. Mosley was undefeated and on top of the pound for pound rankings so this only told me one thing Oscar would lose and so he did.
Oscar went on to win four more fights after his loss to Shane all decent clear wins but no super mega fights with number one pound for pound fighters.
Oscar then felt it was time to rematch Shane Mosley. By this time Mosley had fallen off the pound for pound rankings due to his back to back losses to Vernon Forrest and his head butting extravaganza with Raul Marquez that ended in a No Contest.
Again I felt Oscar would lose for this was another super mega fight so I actually put money down on Mosley despite Oscar being the heavy favorite and Mosley coming off of two losses and an embarrassing NC. I think the odds were as high as 350 to 1.
A lot of people found the decision to be highly controversial but all I know is that I made a lot of money that night.

Then Oscar became very bold and decided to go up in weight all the way up to 160 with the intention to fight the new pound for pound middle weight champion Bernard Hopkins. Now again with my trusty full proof: "Always Bet Against Oscar In Super Mega Fights Theory," I thought this was a no brainer. Hopkins would easily beat Oscar.
But then a very strange thing happened and that was Oscar first fought Felix Sturm for his WBO Middleweight title. Oscar being the sport's Golden Boy did not have to fight Sturm but he chose to which was rather odd. This proved to me that Oscar the fighter might actually be back?
This also told me that my "Always Bet Against Oscar In Super Mega Fights Theory" may not work this time for Oscar the fighter may be back and Oscar the business man was away on a business trip.

Oscar won what we in boxing call a gift decision meaning Oscar really lost to Sturm on points, but give Oscar the win and the belt so we can clear the way for the next super mega fight with Hopkins.
I was confused things did not add up. If the shady corrupt politics gave Oscar that gift win over Sturm, would they give him another gift win over Hopkins?
I was confused things did not add up. If the shady corrupt politics gave Oscar that gift win over Sturm, would they give him another gift win over Hopkins?
Will my flawless "Always Bet Against Oscar In Super Mega Fights Theory" finally be superseded by another shady corrupt gift win over Hopkins? Or might I even regain my once big faith in that Oscar the fighter will enter the ring that night and not Oscar the business man?
I could only do one thing in this situation and that was use someone else's money to bet on Oscar De La Hoya to beat Hopkins. Hey it was the wisest safest thing to do given all the mixed emotions I was experiencing so I found a lucky girl to use her money and I placed it on Oscar to beat Hopkins.
Well we all know what happened that night. Oscar the fighter did show up but for only a few first rounds as Hopkins is known to always start off slow and then methodically breaks down his opponents in a very ugly boring manner. Oscar was even ahead on one of the judges score card of 77-75 when all of a sudden an "alleged" liver shot by Hopkins floored Oscar.
Now anyone who has ever boxed or even sparred knows a real liver shot will definitely make you fall down and take a knee. It will most likely paralyze you temporarily for about 30 seconds or so.
But Oscar felt that was not good enough he needed to improvise and try to win an Academy Award for his performance and began to roll around the ring and pound the canvas over and over again with out thinking of trying to stand up.

Yes it takes a lot of energy to stop drop and roll and pound the canvas over and over again far more energy then trying to simply stand up?
So what do you know? Three weeks later Oscar and Hopkins are sitting ringside at a Golden Boy Promotions fight all buddy buddy as new business partners. Yes folks again what did we learn from September 18 1999? Yes we learned the "Always Bet Against Oscar In Super Mega Fights Theory."
So then Oscar fights Ricardo Mayorga and knocks him out and sets up the next super mega fight with the new number one pound for pound champion Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Yes folks again apply my theory of: "Always Bet Against Oscar In Super Mega Fights Theory." I won some pretty interesting things from this bet I will not go into detail but lets just say I was smiling big time after Floyd won that night.

Oscar then puts on a very half hearted performance against Steve Forbes. Oscar's face is cut like never before but still wins and sets up the next super mega fight with the new number one pound for pound champion of the world Manny Pacquiao.
Now again kids what do we do? Yes we apply the flawless theory one more time: "Always Bet Against Oscar In Super Mega Fights Theory."
I put $1,000.00 on Manny Pacquiao to defeat Oscar I even made a YouTube video about it and already began to celebrate the victory a week before the fight even happened in the two story penthouse suite with two Jacuzzis one of them being outside on the balcony.
This was how certain I was that my: "Always Bet Against Oscar In Super Mega Fights Theory" was a sure thing.

Well kids we all know how that story ended up with Oscar quitting on his stool and during these depressing economic times I made a nice chunk of change that night. I bought my mom some Louis Vuitton just in time for Christmas and gave the majority of the rest of to charity.
When people ask me am I a fan of Oscar De La Hoya I say yes he is a great business man. They then ask me what about Oscar De La Hoya the fighter? I then say yes I was a huge of Oscar De La Hoya the fighter who last fought on May 22, 1999 against Oba Carr.
Oscar the fighter fought with all his heart and soul to a much deserved 11th round TKO Win and that was the last time Oscar the fighter ever set foot in a ring.
