Sammy Watkins: Clemson Tigers WR Will Have Huge Game Against Florida State
The Clemson Tigers' star receiver, Sammy Watkins, is set for his second game of the season and will lead his squad into battle with the Florida State Seminoles en route to a huge game.
Watkins missed the first two games of the season thanks to a suspension, but came back last week and made an immediate impact against the Furman Paladins.
In that game, Watkins' athleticism was on full display. Not only did the receiver have four catches for 52 yards, but Watkins also ran the ball once for a 58-yard score. As Watkins continues to shake off the rust, there's no doubt his receiving yards will go up.
Clemson's Week 4 opponent, Florida State, has yet to see anyone remotely close to the talent that is Watkins.
In their first three games against Murray State, Savannah State and Wake Forest, Florida State won by a combined score of 176-3. On top of that, the Seminoles' opponents were only able to muster a combined total of 208 yards through the air.
Clemson is more than capable of surpassing that mark in just one game, and Watkins will be the toughest offensive player the Seminoles have played against thus far in 2012. It will be quite the adjustment and wake-up call for Florida State's defense after facing three teams with little to no threats on the offensive end.
Having DeAndre Hopkins lining up across from Watkins will benefit the star receiver as well.
FSU can't just focus on one or the other in this game. Hopkins has been the team's best receiver in Watkins' absence with 26 receptions for 319 yards and four touchdowns on the season. He even outgained Watkins last week against Furman.
Hopkins is making the case that not only is he one of the best receivers on his team, but one of the best receivers in the nation, as well.
The Seminoles will have to focus their attention on Hopkins and that will make things easier for Watkins. FSU won't be able to double-team either receiver every time, so both should find a lot more space to work.
If given single coverage throughout this game, Watkins will explode, considering there are few corners in the nation, if any, that can cover him one-on-one.
The 2011 season saw Watkins dominate the Seminoles in the only matchup between the two teams. Watkins lit up the Seminoles for seven catches and 141 yards with two touchdowns.
Florida State did end up with the fourth best defense in the nation last season, so they were no pushovers. But clearly that didn't phase Watkins in the least bit, who proved so with a Heisman-worthy performance.
With the matchup problems Florida State will have and his past history of success against a similar defense, Watkins is primed to have his best game of the season on Saturday.
