EPL Predictions Week 5: Stars Sure to Be the Best at Their Positions
The English Premier League will continue with another set of fixtures sure to produce more spectacular performances.
Last week featured impressive outings from Manchester United's Alexander Buttner and Tottenham's Jermain Defoe, but with so much talent across the league, the spotlight rarely stays on one player for long.
With just four games played this season, there will be players who have yet to make headlines that will be the talk of English football next week.
Here are the players who will make up the Premier League's best XI after the weekend is over.
Goalkeeper: Julio Cesar, Queens Park Rangers
1 of 11Julio Cesar made his debut against Chelsea last week and did a fantastic job in goal for Queens Park Rangers.
Going against an attack that had produced eight goals in three games while looking as dynamic and threatening as any in the Premiership, Cesar came up with four important saves.
The 33-year-old recently moved from Inter Milan and has taken his penchant for making spectacular saves with him to London. More improbable stops will be required of him this week as Rangers take on Tottenham, whose 18.8 shots per game rank as the most by any team in England's top flight, according to Whoscored.com.
Cesar has looked up to the challenge in his brief time with QPR, and he will turn in another impressive performance.
Left-Back: Leighton Baines, Everton
2 of 11Leighton Baines has continued to solidify his place as one of the best left-backs in the Premier League in the early part of Everton's campaign.
The Toffees are shockingly off the a fast start and certainly owe part of their success to Baines' defensive prowess and his ability to contribute in the attack.
Everton will travel to Wales this week to take on Swansea City, and this should be an open match against Michael Laudrup's slick-passing side.
Baines will have room to run in the fixture, and he will take advantage of the space.
Center-Back: Vincent Kompany, Manchester City
3 of 11After dreadful defensive performance against Real Madrid in the Champions League, Manchester City will be looking to bounce back with an important league victory over Arsenal.
The City defense allowed two goals in the final minutes of the match, and Madrid walked away with a 3-2 victory.
As captain, Kompany will have to lead by example and keep the defense organized and active. If the back-line plays as passively as it did against Madrid, the Gunners will produce multiple goals.
Expect the City defense to be markedly better this weekend, and Kompany will lead the charge.
Center-Back: Phil Jagielka, Everton
4 of 11Everton faces a tough test defensively against a potent Swansea City attack, and it will need a fine performance from its center-backs.
Phil Jagielka has been in fine form this season and will be motivated to turn in another excellent match after Everton gave up points in the closing moments of its fixture against Newcastle.
The England international must stay focused for the entire match to keep Swansea's intelligent attack out of the back of the net, and he certainly has the discipline to do this.
Jagielka turn in an outstanding match in the heart of the defense as Everton's back-line looks impressive in Wales.
Right-Back: Branislav Ivanovic, Chelsea
5 of 11Chelsea will be taking on Stoke City at Stamford Bridge this weekend, and the Potters have been stingy defensively this season.
Stoke will make it difficult for the Blues' attack to get into a rhythm, and goals will likely need to come from unexpected places.
Branislav Invanovic has proved capable of creating in the attack from a right-back position, and a creative run forward may be exactly what Chelsea needs to break through in this match.
Expect an excellent match from the Serbian international both on defense and in the attack.
Left Midfielder: Wayne Routledge, Swansea City
6 of 11Wayne Routledge has three assists and goal for a Swansea City side that has been spectacular going forward to start the season.
There were questions about manager Michael Laudrup's ability to successfully keep the team playing the same possession-based tactics after Brendan Rodgers' departure. The Dane has his team playing attractive football while having more attacking intent than it did last season.
This has shown on the score sheet, with Swansea's 10 league goals tying Manchester United and Fulham for best in the EPL. Routledge's piercing runs down the left side of the pitch have helped spur this scoring output.
Against Everton this week, expect the team to attack just as fiercely. Routledge will be flying up and and down the wing, forcing the Everton defense into situations where it must make a spectacular play to thwart his efforts.
Center Midfielder: Santi Cazorla, Arsenal
7 of 11Arsenal face a difficult matchup with Manchester City, and it will need another fantastic performance from new boy Santi Cazorla.
The Spanish international has been the Gunners' best player thus far and has been the engine behind the team's attack.
Against City, Arsenal's offense will go through Cazorla, and he will have to continue to pass and move intelligently for his team to earn a positive result.
His play in the first four games has suggested that he will deliver another fine match.
Center Midfielder: Eden Hazard, Chelsea
8 of 11Eden Hazard has made a convincing argument for himself as the Premier League's best player thus far.
He has revived Chelsea's attack and made the Blues far more dangerous going forward than they were last season.
His four assists is the highest total in the Premiership, and his cerebral play in the center of the pitch elevates the other attacking players around him.
Stoke City will likely use heavy-handed tactics to limit his effect on the match, and he will prove that he can survive a physical side and still produce goals.
Right Midfielder: Antonio Valencia, Manchester United
9 of 11Antonio Valencia has yet to have a stand-out performance in the Premier League this season, but that will change when Manchester United takes on Liverpool.
The winger was forced to play on the back line in the club's season opener against Everton, but Sir Alex Ferguson has wisely chosen not to waste his talents by keeping him in defense since that match.
Valencia is one of the best crossers in England. He is unselfish and intelligent with the ball, and he will create goals against the Reds with his play on the wing.
United will be looking for Valencia to make his mark on the match, and the Ecuadorian will deliver his best performance of the season.
Striker: Robin van Persie, Manchester United
10 of 11With all the fanfare surrounding Robin van Persie's arrival at Old Trafford, exceeding expectations was going to be an extremely difficult task. But that is exactly what the Dutchman has done in his first season with Manchester United.
He is currently tied for the Premiership lead with four goals. Three of those strikes came in a thrilling comeback victory over Southampton.
The incredible finishing ability that van Persie showed during his Arsenal career has been on full display during his first few appearances for the Red Devils.
In his first match against Liverpool since switching clubs, he will continue his fine form.
Striker: Dimitar Berbatov, Fulham
11 of 11While Dimitar Berbatov could never win the full support of Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, his Fulham career is off to a fine start.
The Bulgarian scored twice in his first start for the Cottagers. He appears ready to give Fulham a badly-needed attacking presence after the team lost Moussa Dembele and Clint Dempsey.
Berbatov now faces a favorable matchup against a Wigan defense that has looked shaky this season.
Fulham will receive another fine performance from their new signing in their match this weekend.
