World Football Gossip Roundup: Goal-Line Technology, David Silva, Theo Walcott

Michael CummingsSep 18, 2012

Goal-line technology strikes again. Actually, more like the lack thereof.

Everton became the latest team to suffer from football's lack of goal-line technology, drawing with Newcastle on Monday in a match the Toffees by all rights should have won.

Not surprisingly, Everton manager David Moyes is calling for the introduction of the technology, which is due to arrive in England next year. You might be surprised to learn who agreed with Moyes.

Elsewhere in this Tuesday edition of the B/R World Football Gossip Roundup, we have updates on David Silva's new deal, a foiled plot to return El Niño to Anfield, Theo Walcott's contract saga and a batch of teams chasing Nelson Oliveira.

All the details are inside.

David Moyes Calls for Goal Tech

1 of 5

Everton manager David Moyes called for goal-line technology after his team was denied two valid goals on Monday night against Newcastle (via Daily Telegraph).

"

If you’re the linesman running the line, you’d hope he sees the ball cross the line, that’s their job. You would hope he would see that.

There are two goals they missed but I can’t get them back. I don’t know how the linesman missed them. I had a word there, not ranting and raving, I just said 'hey you missed two goals’. I thought we had another goal in the game that should have counted but didn’t because it was ruled offside. It does affect the outcome of the game. What can I do about it? We all know the tools will come in eventually.

"

Moyes' counterpart, Newcastle's Alan Pardew, agreed. He said: "I’ve been saying for a long time we need technology. It cost Everton a goal tonight."

Everton's Victor Anichebe saw his header ruled out despite it crossing the line, while Marouane Fellaini had another effort ruled out for offside. Only the former would be affected by goal-line technology, which is expected to arrive in England in 2013 (via The Guardian).

David Silva has signed a new contract that will tie him to Manchester City until the summer of 2017 (via MCFC.co.uk).

Silva, 26, joined City from Valencia in 2010.

Regarding the deal, Silva said:

"

I’m very pleased because I’ve been here for two years now and I feel very happy here at the club, in the city and with all the people. So now I’m delighted to be extending my contract and being here really does feel just like home for me.

"

On Monday, the Daily Mail reported that the deal, which was then still unsigned, would be worth £200,000 per week.

Damien Comolli Considered Bringing Back El Nino?

3 of 5

Former Liverpool director of football Damien Comolli considered re-signing striker Fernando Torres early in 2012 before Comolli himself was fired, according to the Daily Mail.

Torres, 28, left Liverpool to sign with Chelsea in a £50 million transfer in 2011. He struggled to settle in with his new club, and Comolli had reportedly considered bringing Torres back to Anfield on the advice of a current player.

Comolli was fired on April 12 (via Daily Telegraph).

Contract Saga to Affect Theo Walcott's Place?

4 of 5

Theo Walcott's ongoing contract drama could affect the midfielder's place in the Arsenal team, according to Gunners boss Arsene Wenger (via The Guardian).

"It can," Wenger said, "but at the moment, I still hope to extend his contract so, at the moment, it doesn't affect me. Of course at some stage … if, in April, it's not done, you can think it will be difficult to do."

Walcott, 23, joined Arsenal from Southampton in 2006. His current deal expires at the end of the current season, and he is thought to be holding out for a contract worth £100,000 per week.

Walcott was used as a substitute in Arsenal's Premier League matches against Stoke City and Southampton.
