England vs Ukraine: When, Where and Who to Watch in World Cup Qualifier

Alex KayJun 7, 2018

England is hosting Ukraine for a 2014 World Cup qualifier on Tuesday, and it promises to be nothing short of an incredibly exciting match.

These two teams met at Euro 2012 in a thrilling contest that the Three Lions ended up victorious in with a final score of 1-0, thanks to Wayne Rooney’s brilliance.

Ukraine will be out for revenge, and hoping to start the qualification for just the second World Cup in the history of the country on the right foot.

However, it won’t be easy, as the team must travel to Wembley Stadium to clash with a highly-skilled English squad that hopes to finally break through and have some modern success in an international competition at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Let’s take a look at where to watch this match, who to keep an eye on and make a prediction for the final score.

Where: Wembley Stadium, London, England

When: Tuesday, Sept. 11 at 3:00 p.m. ET

Watch: FOX Soccer Channel, FOX Deportes

England Player to Watch: Steven Gerrard

The English captain is one of the few international superstars that will actually be in the lineup for this match.

According to a report by Reuters (via the Chicago Tribune), Theo Walcott, Wayne Rooney, Ashley Cole, John Terry, Andy Carroll, Gareth Barry, Ashley Young and Scott Parker are all going to be on the sidelines for the contest with various fitness issues.

However, the Liverpool midfielder will be applying his usual brilliance, and should have no problem setting the pace and providing a scoring touch for the Three Lions in this contest.

Expect coach Roy Hodgson to employ a starting XI that features Gerrard as the centerpiece.

Ukraine Player to Watch: Roman Zozulya

This Ukrainian striker has been drawing comparisons to Wayne Rooney, and could be the catalyst to an upset on Tuesday.

He’s got amazing strength, a solid touch and a knack for putting the ball in the back of the net.

While Ukraine is going to sorely miss Andriy Shevchenko—who captained the squad for Euro 2012 before retiring from international play—they may have found someone to succeed him as the main scoring threat.

Prediction: England 2, Ukraine 0

Regardless of the star power on the pitch for England, they have a better roster from top to bottom. They will have an easy time dispatching an undermanned Ukraine squad from the comfort of their Wembley home.

Expect this to be nothing but a one-sided affair in favor of the Three Lions.
