Chelsea Transfer Talk: Would Blues Be a Good Fit for Marouane Fellaini?

Ryan DayJun 7, 2018

Stamford Bridge is on full alert.

Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini allegedly made remarks that he wants to leave Goodison Park, despite having more than three years left on his current contract which runs through 2016.

Fellaini apparently made disparaging comments while he was on international duty with Belgium, which began their qualification campaign Friday for World Cup 2014 in Brazil.

"

"I am just starting my fifth season at Everton. This will be one of my last," he told Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad, according to The Guardian. "I have seen everything. In January or at the end of the season I will turn to another club or championship."

"

Days later, Fellaini used his Facebook page to try and put the fire out that he'd inadvertently sparked. It's funny, however, that the Toffees man doesn't deny any of the comments Het Nieuwsblad published:

"

"I was very surpised to read in some newspapers that I will leave Everton very soon and perhaps next January. Let me remind you that I am very happy in Liverpool and our start of the championship was good. Kevin Mirallas and some other good players joined us to make a better squad in order to realize a good championship in the line of the end of the last one. So with Everton, I am ready to play all the season and to reach our goals of this season."

"

Fellaini would be an incredible pickup by Chelsea, filling out their midfield wonderfully while giving them something they don't currently have—an asset on set-pieces and corner-kicks.

The Blues are filled to the brim with attacking midfielders, with Eden Hazard, Daniel Sturridge, Victor Moses and Juan Mata providing more than a capable group of players at that position.

What Chelsea desperately needs is someone who can play deeper and play a defensive posture in the center of the midfield.

Enter Marouane Fellaini.

Not only can Fellaini carry his 6'5" frame with superb athleticism—his 2.9 tackles per game last season (according to WhoScored.com) shows just how well he gets around the pitch—but he's only 24 years old, five years the junior of any other defensive midfielder on the Blues roster.

It all depends on whether or not Everton are willing to part with who is arguably the best player on their roster. If he becomes available, should Chelsea go after him?
