College Football Scores 2012: Shocking Results from Early Week 2 Action

Darin PikeSep 8, 2012

The college football season is full of lopsided games early in the season. Many FBS programs attempt to pad the win column while helping the coffers of smaller programs and FCS schools.

Adjustments to allow just one win over an FCS team has helped stem too many laughable opponents, but a lot of programs still rely on easy schedules to secure their national ranking.

The beautiful part of lopsided games, though, is they make for fantastic upset stories.

Results: Maryland 36, Temple 27

Favorite: Temple -8

Maryland lost by 31 points in this game last season. Taking its act on the road didn't seem like the best opportunity for redemption, especially after a narrow 7-6 win against an FCS team to open the 2012 season.

Maryland built a 26-3 halftime lead and held on for the upset victory. The Terps had a 19-9 advantage in first downs and a decided advantage in yards gained.

Temple was simply out of sync most of the game, but managed to close the gap to 29-27 midway through the fourth quarter. However, a Justus Pickett touchdown run closed out the scoring and the game for Maryland.

Results: Kansas State 52, Miami 13

Favorite: Kansas State -7

It isn't at all surprising that Kansas State won this game. It isn't even a surprise that the Wildcaats more than covered the spread.

What is shocking is that they completely manhandled Miami and made the Hurricanes look absolutely impotent in the process.

The Wildcats had a 27-13 edge with first downs, outgained Miami 499-264 and had three takeaways to just one turnover. Kansas State had more than seven yards per play versus 4.7 for Miami.

The balance of power in college football has certainly shifted away from Florida. A similar pattern has occurred in the NFL.

Results: Virginia 17, Penn State 16

Favorite: Virginia -10

Virginia was expected to roll in this game. It didn't, and in the end it was a game it should have lost.

Sam Ficken was inserted to kick field goals and extra points, and hit one of each. The problem is he had two PAT and five field-goal attempts on the day; he missed from 40, 38 and 20 yards. Ficken then had an opportunity for redemption on a 42-yard attempt as time expired.

Penn State also passed on a 50-yard attempt and a 52-yard opportunity at the end of the half, so it was apparently already familiar with its issues at kicker.

Results: Mississippi State 28, Auburn 10

Favorite: Mississippi State -3

How quickly the mighty have fallen.

Auburn has fallen from the 2010 national champion to 0-2 in 2012. Losing to No. 14 Clemson wasn't a surprise, but not being competitive against Mississippi State is a sign of bad things to come.
