College Football Picks Week 2: Home Crowds That Will Inspire Upset Bids
College football's opening week provided some must-watch football, and Week 2 will be as good or better. The season's second week boasts a handful of potential upsets.
Underdog performances are what the early weeks of football season are all about. BCS hopefuls know that one loss can derail everything they've worked all offseason for, and lesser opponents are out to ruin dreams.
Respect is on the line. No one wants to be shown up, especially in front of their home crowd.
Let's take a look at three teams that will use their 12th man to pull an upset in Week 2.
No. 24 Florida Gators vs. Texas A&M Aggies
Jeff Driskel will start for the Gators behind center, but that shouldn't make Florida fans confident. It's Week 2 of the season, and you're still figuring out the most important position on the field.
He was 10-of-16 for 114 yards and a touchdown in Florida's Week 1 victory over Bowling Green. He is a capable runner, but he still faces a steep learning curve and tremendous pressure.
Kyle Field will be a pressure cooker for the Gators. It's going to be loud, and the Aggies are looking for respect in the SEC.
Their season opener against Louisiana Tech was postponed, so you know this team has energy.
Freshman Johnny Manziel will face blitzes from all angles. The Gators defense is as good as their offense is bad. However, Manziel has some weapons to work with.
Christine Michael and Ryan Swope give Manziel two players to lean on as he learns the nuances of SEC football.
Look for the Aggies defense to step up to the plate. Linebacker Sean Porter is a pass-rusher to watch, and Driskel will be very familiar with him before this one is over.
I can't wait for this game. Aggies pull the upset by a narrow margin.
No. 16 Nebraska Cornhuskers vs. UCLA Bruins
This game will run into the 40s, but I like the Bruins to pull the upset. Johnathan Franklin was possibly the best player in college football's opening week, but no one is giving him any attention after his 200-plus-yard, three-touchdown performance.
Nebraska is deeper on offense, but they gave up 185 yards on the ground to Southern Miss last week. If that happens again, Franklin will make them pay.
Franklin isn't alone. Brett Hundley was extremely efficient at quarterback in Week 1, and he gives UCLA's offense some needed balance.
This game may come down to who makes the last stop. The Cornhuskers face more pressure, and the Bruins crowd will make themselves heard every step of the way.
UCLA's offense is exciting, and they will make a serious upset bid in this one.
No. 7 Georgia Bulldogs vs. Missouri Tigers
With or without four defensive starters, Georgia was bad against Buffalo in Week 1. They won the game, but it doesn't do anything for their confidence entering their Week 2 tilt against the Tigers.
The Bulldogs are the better team on paper, but they gave up 347 yards in their season opener. The Bulldogs were playing second-string players in critical spots, but it's Buffalo.
Missouri will attack them in every which way. Kendial Lawrence averaged 12.1 yards on his way to a 121-yard, two-touchdown performance against Southeastern Louisiana.
Yes, I realize that Southeastern Louisiana is a cupcake. But they only allowed 10 points. The Tigers took care of business as expected.
This is Missouri's first chance to prove themselves among SEC competition, and their home crowd will be rocking. Expect a big-game feel, and a big-game performance from the Tigers offense.
Dual-threat quarterback James Franklin will test the Bulldogs defense, and the Tigers will shock the nation by knocking off the No. 7 team.
