Everett Golson: Breaking Down Notre Dame QB's First Start
Everett Golson looked decent in his first career start. He was 12-of-18 for a touchdown and an interception.
Most importantly, the Irish destroyed the Navy Midshipmen 50-10 in Dublin, Ireland. I thought he looked fairly comfortable in the pocket, and he was decently accurate with his throws.
That said, he didn't have to do much beyond managing the game in this one. The Notre Dame defense was nasty and opportunistic throughout. They forced three fumbles and picked off a pass to keep Golson and the offense in great position to score.
In addition to the defense, the running game was simply dominant.
Notre Dame rushed for 293 yards and five touchdowns against Navy. They simply blew the Midshipmen off the line of scrimmage.
George Atkinson III had 99 yards with two scores, and Theo Riddick had 107 yards with two scores. When a QB is getting that type of running game, it makes his job a lot easier.
To Golson's credit, he only made the one mistake in the second quarter. He threw an interception inside the Navy 5-yard line while Notre Dame was set to make the score 27-0.
That won't harm his team while playing against an inferior opponent, up 20 points, and in front of a raucous pro-Irish crowd, but come Week 3, this is an area that needs to be touched up.
Overall, I'd give him a B grade for his debut.
The Irish will take on one of the top 10 defenses in the country in Michigan State in Week 3, and the game is in East Lansing.
The Spartans will represent Golson's first huge test.
That game will tell Irish fans a lot about what they have at QB, and as a team.
